AUTHOR'S NOTE<br />

During the course <strong>of</strong> research for this study, the author has<br />

been active in the field <strong>of</strong> composition in <strong>New</strong> Zeal<strong>and</strong>. From 1978 to<br />

date, the author has been a member <strong>of</strong> the committee <strong>of</strong> the Composers<br />

Association <strong>of</strong> <strong>New</strong> Zeal<strong>and</strong>, serving terms in the capacity <strong>of</strong> Secretary<br />

(1979-80 committee year) <strong>and</strong> President (1982-3 committee year) <strong>of</strong> the<br />

Association. In addition to this, the author has served two terms as<br />

Editor <strong>of</strong> Canzona (the <strong>of</strong>ficial newsletter <strong>of</strong> the Composers Association<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>New</strong> Zeal<strong>and</strong>), assuming responsibility for the preparation <strong>of</strong> volumes<br />

(nos. j-4) <strong>and</strong> 4 (nos. 12-15) <strong>of</strong> the periodical.<br />

<strong>The</strong> author has compiled <strong>and</strong> edited several publications on the<br />

topic <strong>of</strong> composition in <strong>New</strong> Zeal<strong>and</strong>, these being Bibliography <strong>of</strong> <strong>New</strong><br />

Zeal<strong>and</strong> Compositions volume one (1940-1980) (Christchurch, Nota Bene<br />

Music, 1980. 146pp.), Aspects <strong>of</strong> <strong>New</strong> Zeal<strong>and</strong> Composition 1950-1980<br />

(published as Canzona vol.3 no.l0, November 1981. 68pp.) <strong>and</strong><br />

Bibliography <strong>of</strong> <strong>New</strong> Zeal<strong>and</strong> Compositions.volume one: second edition<br />

(-1982) (Christchurch, Nota Bene Music, 1982. 140pp.). <strong>The</strong> author was<br />

also co-editor <strong>of</strong>, with Valerie Harris, <strong>and</strong> principal contributor to<br />

Douglas Lilburn, a 6~t4chk~6t for Douglas Lilburn on his retirement<br />

from the Victoria University <strong>of</strong> Wellington, 31 January 1980 (pu~lished<br />

as Canzona vol.l no.3, January 1980. 112pp.; later reprinted as<br />

Douglas Lilburn 2nd ed., Wellington, Composers Association <strong>of</strong> <strong>New</strong><br />

Zeal<strong>and</strong>, 1980. 114pp.). <strong>The</strong> experience gained during the preparation<br />

<strong>of</strong> these publications has provided an invaluable perspective to the<br />

research undertaken for this study.<br />

Notes on the sources<br />

Due to the nature <strong>and</strong> scope <strong>of</strong> the study, an explanation <strong>of</strong> some<br />

<strong>of</strong> the reference sources is required.<br />

<strong>The</strong> time period <strong>of</strong> this s·tudy is close to the present day. Most<br />

<strong>of</strong> the composers <strong>and</strong> <strong>music</strong>ians referred to are living subjects <strong>and</strong> in<br />

many cases are still activ~ly worki~g in their chosen field. Hany <strong>of</strong><br />

the organisations mentioned are also still in existence. On the one<br />

h<strong>and</strong> this has enabled personal contact with the subjects, either<br />

through correspondence or in conversation. On the other h<strong>and</strong>, this h~s
