On a number <strong>of</strong> occasions throughout his career, Lilburn was<br />

asked to deliver public lectures, addresses, <strong>and</strong> radio talks on a<br />

variety <strong>of</strong> subjects. Such talks include a tribute to Evelyn Page,<br />

a birthday tribute to Ralph Vaughan Williams,38 an introductory radio<br />

talk to the <strong>music</strong> <strong>of</strong> Ravi Shankar,39 a television talk on the work <strong>of</strong><br />

Rita Angus,40 a retrospective talk for the tOOth programme <strong>of</strong> Owen<br />

As with the interview <strong>of</strong> Lilburn by Jack Body published in the<br />

6~~ch4i6~ edition <strong>of</strong> Canzona, these talks <strong>of</strong>ten provide a good insight<br />

into Lilburn's attitudes towards various aspects <strong>of</strong> his <strong>life</strong>, career<br />

<strong>and</strong> <strong>music</strong>.<br />

To this end, the most important <strong>of</strong> these talks was his<br />

address delivered to the students at the first Cambridge Summer Music<br />

School in 1946.<br />

This amounted to a personal manifesto <strong>of</strong> his beliefs<br />

about composition at the time <strong>of</strong> writing. This talk, <strong>and</strong> others where<br />
