Bars 117 and 118 show a rhythmically interesting melody line moving
above a slower-pulsed harmonic/accompanimental line. The three lower
lines sounding (violin II, viola, cello), begin to gather together
into a rhythmic unison line. This is interrupted at bars 119-20
where the violin II moves in parallel thirds with the melody, but is
resumed again at bars 121-4. A brief pedal point of D (and A) is
established in the cello (later joined by the bass) from the end of
bar 124. Above this, the violin and viola lines move in rhythmic
unl.son.
At bar 128 a passage based on the process of imitation begins.
