suddenly thrown onto a weak beat. This accent is immediately preceded
by the sounding (usually accented) of a note on the strong beat
(sometimes two initiating notes are sounded in quick succession, with
the first of these occurring on the strong beat). Once the accented
note on the weak beat is sounded, it is invariably sustained for no less
than four times the duration of the initiating note on the strong beat
(usually it is sustained for longer than this). Curiously, the two
(or three) notes that make up the whiplash are never of the same pitch
in a melodic statement and are usually accompanied, where the accompanying
lines move in rhythmic unison,with a changing harmony.. A CAUlcendo
mark often precedes the use of a strong-weak rhythmic whiplash, and the
dynamic level at which it is articulated is usually greater than
mezzo-6oltte.
