Lilburn's triadic parallelism did not suddenly appear in his works from the Diversions of 1947 onwards. Rather, it evolved slowly from the harmonisation of melodic lines in parallel thirds - a distinctive feature of the early overtures in particular. This evolution, interest~ ingly, can be most clearly witnessed in one of the little hallmarks or 'glyphs' of Lilburn's early style. - that of the rapidly ascending anacrusis figure. In the Aotearoa Overture (1940), this can be heard prominently in the last bars of the work," where it comprises the typical parallel thirds movement, with the uppermost line doubled at the octave:

A logical step from this, is to combine the parallel movement of both thirds and fourths to form parallel triads, with all three lines remaining within a diatonic texture.
