ARTICLE 35- TEMPORARY/CASUAL/STUDENT LABOUR<br />

(MAINTENANCE SECTION ONLY)<br />

35.01 (a) Temporary employees are those hired for a definite term or task<br />

not to exceed one (1) year. Temporary employees shall be eligible<br />

for all the benefits <strong>of</strong> this collective agreement except pension. A<br />

temporary employee shall not be able to grieve termination and<br />

shall not be able to use the lay<strong>of</strong>f provisions <strong>of</strong> this agreement.<br />

Casual labour is defined as indefinite short term employment. A<br />

casual employee who exceeds six (6) continuous weeks <strong>of</strong> full time<br />

(more than twenty-four (24) hours per week) employment, shall<br />

become a temporary employee with seniority from his/her start<br />

date. Casual labour will not be employed when qualified retirees<br />

are available. Casual labour will only be used in the Service line<br />

and Interior Cleaning functions unless otherwise mutually agreed to<br />

by the parties.<br />

Students hired for the summer vacation period will not be employed<br />

beyond the second pay week <strong>of</strong> September. The use <strong>of</strong> Student<br />

Employees shall not result in a reduction to the permanent staff<br />

complement in any area. They shall not be subject to the provisions<br />

for temporary employees (35.01(a)) or casual labour (35.01(b)).<br />

ARTICLE 36 - EQUIPMENT<br />

36.01 The <strong>City</strong> (HSR) agrees to furnish welders and body repair mechanics with<br />

one (1) pair <strong>of</strong> leather gloves as required. Before securing a new pair <strong>of</strong><br />

leather gloves an Employee must turn in his old pair in order to prove his<br />

need for same.<br />

36.02 The <strong>City</strong> (HSR) agrees to make available during the continuance <strong>of</strong> this<br />

agreement, six (6) clean suits <strong>of</strong> coveralls every two (2) weeks to all<br />

hourly/salary rated maintenance, foremen and stockroom Employees<br />

such coveralls to remain the property <strong>of</strong> the <strong>City</strong> (HSR).<br />

In lieu <strong>of</strong> the above, all applicable Employees may be supplied with six (6)<br />

clean sets <strong>of</strong> work shirts and pants every two (2) weeks provided they are<br />

available under the rental and cleaning contract <strong>of</strong> the supplier firm.<br />

It is mutually agreed that, when notice is duly posted, each Employee may<br />

select coveralls or shirts and pants once only in the spring and once only<br />

in the fall.<br />
