TYPE LOCALITY: Southern Brazil.
ILLUSTRATION: Mart. Fl. Bras. 13, pt. 1: pi. 128, f. 5.
DISTRIBUTION: Eastern Brazil to Paraguay.
BRAZIL: "Southern Brazil," Sello 358 (B, BM, K, type). Minas
Geraes: Perna de Pao, Gardner 4690 (BM, K). Matto Grosso:
Cuyaba, Malme in 1902 (S), in 1903 (S). Santa Catharina: Ule
925 (B, N).
PARAGUAY: Conception, Hassler 7498 (BM, type collection of P.
violacea L albiflora).
This is one of the species that have been confused with P. subpeltata
(P. alba). The presence of dentiform processes on the inside
of the operculum, suggesting the fringe on the outside of the operculum,
characteristic in the section Kermesinae, distinguishes it
from near relatives. The petiolar glands in the specimens cited
above are more elongate than is shown in Masters' illustration.
