3-lobed two-thirds to three-quarters their length (lobes oblong, 3<br />

to 6 cm. long, 1 to 3 cm. wide, rounded, almost truncate at apex,<br />

glandular in sinuses between lobes, the middle lobe slightly longer<br />

than the ascending lateral lobes), subcordate at base, entire at<br />

margin, subcoriaceous, the nerves and veins impressed above;<br />

peduncles up to 4 cm. long, recurved; bracts oblong-lanceolate,<br />

about 1 cm. long and 5 mm. wide, acute, narrowed at base, 1-nerved,<br />

borne about 1 cm. below base of flower; calyx tube campanulate;<br />

sepals oblong, about 1.5 cm. long and 5 mm. wide, obtuse, concave,<br />

carinate, the keel winged, terminating in a horn 4 to 5 mm. long;<br />

petals linear-oblong, slightly shorter than sepals; corona filaments<br />

in several series, the outermost about 1 cm. long, slender, radiate,<br />

the inner erect, very short; operculum membranous, filamentose<br />

above; ovary ovoid, glabrous.<br />

TYPE LOCALITY: Rio Preto,<br />

State of Pernambuco, Brazil.<br />

DISTRIBUTION: Known only from the type locality<br />

in eastern<br />

BRAZIL: Pernambuco: Rio Preto, Gardner 2877 (K, type).<br />

This species is<br />

intermediate between the series Laurifoliae and<br />

Lobatae, having the narrow stipules of the former and leaves shaped<br />

like those of many species of the latter.<br />

rounded or cordulate, serrulate, membranous or subcoriaceous,<br />

glabrous, or finely puberulent beneath; peduncles 3 to 4<br />

cm. long; bracts free to base, ovate-lanceolate, 4.5 to 5 cm. long,<br />

1.5 to 2 cm. wide, entire, membranous, green, glabrous or puberulent;<br />

flowers 5 to 7 cm. wide; calyx tube campanulate; sepals oblong,<br />

2 to 2.5 cm. long, 8 to 10 mm. wide, dorsally long-aristate just<br />

below apex, white within; petals oblong-spatulate, slightly shorter<br />

than the sepals, obtuse, white; corona filaments filiform, purple,<br />

in several series, those of the 2 outer series about 2 cm. long, the<br />

innermost half as long, the intermediate ones very short; operculum<br />

membranous, arising at base of tube, cleft into numerous linear-
