This is readily distinguished from P. Eggersii and P. Guentheri,<br />
the two other entire-leaved species of this section. The bracts, soon<br />
deciduous and not present in several of the specimens examined, vary<br />
from linear-setaceous to ovate or oblanceolate, a rather extreme<br />
variation within a species.<br />

Plant glabrous throughout; stem sub terete; stipules semi-oblong,<br />
1 to 2.5 cm. long, 0.5 to 1 cm. wide, mucronate (mucro 3 to 4 mm.<br />
long), entire, thick-coriaceous, persistent; petioles 1.5 to 3.5 cm. long,<br />
4-glandular, the glands about 1.5 mm. wide, sessile, 2 borne near<br />
apex of petiole, 2 near middle; leaves oblong-ovate or ovate-lanceolate,<br />
7 to 14 cm. long, 3 to 7 cm. wide, acute or subacute at apex,<br />
rounded at base, septuplinerved, conspicuously reticulate-veined,<br />
thick-coriaceous, bright green above, glaucescent beneath; peduncles<br />
solitary, 3 to 4 cm. long; bracts ovate-lanceolate, 6 to 7 mm. long,<br />
about 3 mm. wide, acuminate at apex, cordulate, sessile, dissitate<br />
near middle of peduncle; flowers about 5 cm. wide; calyx tube broadly<br />
campanulate, about 7 mm. long; sepals oblong, 2.5 to 3 cm. long,<br />
about 1 cm. wide, obtuse, minutely awned dorsally just below apex<br />
(awn barely 1 mm. long), green without, white(?) within; petals<br />
oblong, subequal to sepals, obtuse, white(?); corona filaments in 4<br />
series, the outermost filiform, 2 to 2.5 cm. long, radiate, those of the<br />
succeeding series 3 to 4 mm. long, capitellate, erect; operculum white,<br />
6 to 7 mm. high, cleft nearly to base into linear, overlapping segments<br />
about 0.7 mm. wide; ovary ovoid, glabrous.<br />
TYPE LOCALITY: Mapiri region, San Carlos, Bolivia.<br />
DISTRIBUTION: Known only from type locality, in northern<br />
Bolivia.<br />
