hirsutulous without, 3-nerved, the middle nerve carinate toward<br />
apex and terminating in a short horn; petals linear, slightly shorter<br />
than the sepals, lavender; corona filaments in 5 series, those of the<br />
2 outer filiform, about 1.3 cm. long, violet at base, radiate, those of<br />
the inner series almost capillary, about 2 mm. long, erect; operculum<br />
membranous, erect, about 1 mm. high, minutely denticulate; limen<br />
similar to the operculum, about 2 mm. high; ovary subglobose,<br />
densely white-villous-tomentose; fruit globose, about 3.5 cm. in<br />
diameter, villous; seeds oblong-cuneate, about 4 mm. long and 3 mm.<br />
wide, shallowly tridentate, finely reticulate.<br />
TYPE LOCALITY: Santiago de Las Vegas, Province of Habana,<br />
Cuba, where cultivated.<br />
DISTRIBUTION: British Honduras; cultivated in Cuba.<br />
BRITISH HONDURAS: Churchyard Pine Ridge, Sibun River,<br />
Gentle 1826 (Mich).<br />
CUBA: Habana: Santiago de Las Vegas, cultivated, Baker 2588<br />
(B, Cal, HV, N, type, P, Ph, Y); Luna 409 (HS).<br />
This species was based upon specimens of a plant grown in Cuba<br />
from seeds said to have been brought from British Honduras. It was<br />
not collected in its native country, however, until 1936. Its relationship<br />
is with the Brazilian P. clathrata.<br />

Plant glabrous throughout; stem slender, terete, wiry; stipules<br />
soon deciduous; petioles up to 1 cm. long, glandless; leaves angulately<br />
3-lobed or subentire and nearly reniform, 1.5 to 3 cm. along midnerve,<br />
3 to 5 cm. at greatest width (lobes orbicular or orbicular-ovate,<br />
rounded at apex), deeply cordate, 3-5-nerved, membranous, green<br />
and lustrous above, purplish and covered with numerous yellowish,<br />
suborbicular, peltate scales beneath; peduncles solitary, 2 to 3 cm.<br />
long; bracts 1 to 1.8 cm. long, 3-5-cleft on each side to below middle,<br />
bearing at margin and at tips of segments scales similar to those on<br />
leaves; flowers 2 to 2.5 cm. wide; calyx tube campanulate; sepals<br />
lance-oblong, about 1.5 cm. long, 0.4 cm. wide; petals similar to the<br />
sepals; corona filaments in 4 series, those of the 2 outer filiform,<br />
about 8 mm. long, radiate, those of the 2 inner series capillary, 1<br />
mm. long; operculum membranous, denticulate, recurved at margin;<br />
ovary subglobose, glabrous; fruit globose, about 2.5 cm. in diameter,<br />
