This differs from P. Vellozii in having much more deeply lobed<br />

leaves, the lobes being narrowly lanceolate or narrowly oblonglanceolate,<br />

whereas in its relative they are broadly ovate-lanceolate.<br />

The margin of the leaves is irregularly serrulate, in P. Vellozii<br />

essentially entire. The ovary is glabrous, not densely hirsute as in<br />

P. Vellozii.<br />

Stem slender, terete, brownish- villosulous-tomentose; stipules<br />

semi-ovate, 1 cm. long, 0.5 cm. wide, aristate, dentate or denticulate,<br />

villosulous at margin and on nerves beneath; petioles 1 to 2 cm.<br />

long, minutely 2-4-glandular, the glands stipitate, embedded in<br />

the tomentum; leaves lanceolate or oblong-lanceolate, 8 to 11 cm.<br />

long, 2.5 to 4 cm. wide, acute or obtusish, mucronulate at apex,<br />

rounded at base, subtrinerved (midnerve prominent, the lateral<br />

basal nerves and the 5 or 6 pairs of secondary nerves less so), appressed-pilose<br />

with rather short hairs above, densely villosulous<br />

beneath, especially on nerves, green above, glaucous beneath;<br />

peduncles 2 to 3 cm. long, slender; bracts lanceolate, 1.5 to 2 cm.<br />

long, 6 to 8 mm. wide, gradually narrowing to the acute apex, pinnatin'd-laciniate,<br />

villosulous, the nerves and veins dark beneath; calyx<br />

tube broadly campanulate; sepals lanceolate, about 2 cm. long,<br />

aristate,<br />

pilosulous without; petals slightly shorter than the sepals,<br />

hyaline; corona filamentose, 3-ranked, the outermost row of filaments<br />

about 6 mm. long, the middle row 3 mm., the innermost 1 mm. ;<br />

operculum membranous in lower half, filamentose above, the filaments<br />

about 1.5 mm. long, erect; limen membranous, cupuliform;<br />

ovary brown-hirsute-villous.<br />

TYPE LOCALITY: Serra de Ouro Preto, Brazil.<br />

DISTRIBUTION: Known only from the State of Minas Geraes,<br />

eastern Brazil.<br />

Serra da Piedade, Warming 1169 (Cop, N).<br />

Allied to P. campanulata, this plant differs in having the leaves<br />

entire and the stipules more deeply toothed.<br />
