7 to 8 mm. long, about 1 cm. wide; sepals oblong-lanceolate, 2.5 to<br />

3 cm. long, 1 cm. wide, obtuse, terminating in a foliaceous awn<br />

about 2 mm. long; petals lanceolate, about 2 cm. long and 5 mm.<br />

wide; corona in several series, the outermost filaments about 1.5<br />

cm. long, those of the second rank about 5 mm. long, the succeeding<br />

rows 0.3 to 0.4 mm. long; operculum membranous, fimbriate; nectar<br />

ring small; limen membranous, cupuliform, closely surrounding base<br />

of gynophore; ovary subglobose, glabrous.<br />

Closely allied to P. nitida, this species differs in having 3-<br />

5-nerved, more deeply toothed, thinner leaves, and much slenderer<br />

petioles and peduncles.<br />

Plant glabrous throughout; stem slender; stipules filiform, 3 to 4<br />

mm. long; petioles 0.5 to 1.5 cm. long, glandular at or above middle,<br />

2 to 6 cm. long, 1 to 3 cm. wide, acute at apex, shortmucronulate,<br />

rounded and subpeltate at base, membranous, lustrous,<br />

conspicuously veined; peduncles solitary, 7 to 11 cm. long, slender;<br />

bracts broadly ovate, 2 to 2.5 cm. or more long, obtuse at apex,<br />

mucronulate, rounded or cordulate at base, membranous, violetrose^);<br />

calyx tube campanulate, about 4 mm. long, ventricose;<br />

sepals 2.5 cm. long, or more, dorsally winged-carinate toward apex,<br />

the keel terminating in a short awn.<br />
