apex; operculum borne just below middle of tube, erect, about<br />

2 mm. high, filamentose in upper third; ovary ovoid, strongly sulcate,<br />

tomentulous.<br />

TYPE LOCALITY: Cubatao, Minas Geraes, Brazil.<br />

DISTRIBUTION: States of Minas Geraes and Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.<br />

BRAZIL: Minas Geraes: Cubatao, Sello 2125 (B), 2148 (B, type,<br />

N). Arapongo, Bailey & Bailey 1144- (N). Rio de Janeiro: Tijuca,<br />

Glaziou 17620 (B, Gen, K, P). Corcovado, Glaziou 3993 (Cop).<br />

This is closely related to P. pentagona, the erect flowers and<br />

larger, usually subacute leaves perhaps not being sufficiently important<br />

characters upon which to separate the two.<br />

Scandent shrub; branches glabrous, the younger portions sometimes<br />

velutinous or puberulent; stipules early deciduous; petioles 0.5<br />

to 1.5 cm. long, biglandular at apex; leaves ovate, broadly oblong,<br />

or obovate, 5 to 9 cm. long, 2.5 to 6.5 cm. wide, acute or obtuse at<br />

apex, rounded at base, penninerved (lateral nerves about 6 to a side),<br />

membranous, glabrous above, very minutely puberulous beneath,<br />

concolorous; peduncles solitary or in pairs, 0.7 to 1.5 cm. long; calyx<br />

tube cylindric-campanulate, 0.8 to 1 cm. long, 5 to 7 mm. wide at<br />

throat; sepals narrowly oblong, 1.5 to 2 cm. long, 5 to 6 mm. wide,<br />

obtuse, green without, white within; petals similar to the sepals, 1 to<br />

1.5 cm. long, 3 to 4 mm. wide; corona filaments in 2 series, the outer<br />

falcate-dilated above middle, attenuate at tips,<br />

about 7 mm. long,<br />

This has the general aspect of P. elliptica, but the leaves are of<br />

thinner texture, the flowers larger, and the outer corona filaments<br />

dilated above the middle.
