Stem slender, terete, hirsutulous; stipules semi-ovate, about 15<br />

mm. long, 5 mm. wide, cuspidate-acuminate, denticulate especially<br />

toward base, subrevolute, reticulate-veined (veins impressed on<br />

upper surface), sparingly hirsutulous or glabrescent above, sparingly<br />

hirsutulous on veins beneath; petioles up to 3 cm. long, bearing 2 to<br />

4 inconspicuous, stipitate glands near middle; leaves 5 to 12 cm.<br />

along midnerve, 4 to 9 cm. along lateral nerves, 6 to 12 cm. wide<br />

between apices of lateral lobes, 3-lobed to or beyond middle (lobes<br />

lanceolate or oblong-lanceolate, acute or acuminate, minutely mucronulate),<br />

rounded or subcordate at base, entire, or slightly serrulate<br />

at base, 5-nerved, reticulate-veined (nerves and veins impressed on<br />

upper surface, blackish on under surface), subcoriaceous, dark green<br />

above, grayish glaucous beneath, hirtellous on nerves and veins and<br />

at margin, or glabrous above; peduncles solitary, up to 3 cm. Jong,<br />

slender; bracts lanceolate or linear-lanceolate, 1.5 to 2 cm. long,<br />

about 1 cm. wide, acuminate, dentate or serrate in lower half, membranous,<br />

hirtellous at margin, and on nerves and veins beneath;<br />

flowers 5 to 6 cm. wide; sepals oblong-lanceolate, about 2.5 cm. long<br />

and 8 mm. wide, obtuse, 5-nerved, the nerves blackish and hirsutulous<br />

on outside, the middle nerve terminating in an awn about<br />

3 mm. long; petals oblong-lanceolate, subequal to the sepals, obtuse;<br />

corona in 3 series, the 2 outer rows of filaments 1.5 to 2.5 cm. long,<br />

those of the third series about 4 mm. long, capitellate; operculum<br />

membranous, filamentose, the filaments about 4 mm. long; limen<br />

cupuliform, closely surrounding base of gynophore; ovary subglobose,<br />

brownish-hirsute-villous.<br />
