This species is at once recognized by the shape of bracts. The<br />

flowers are larger than in P. foetida, the sepals being linear or linearlanceolate,<br />

as in P. Palmeri.<br />

Plant glabrous throughout; stem subterete, striate, slender,<br />

purplish; stipules cleft nearly to base into narrowly linear or filiform,<br />

gland-tipped segments; petioles 1 to 3 cm. long, usually bearing a<br />

few stiff, gland-tipped hairs; leaves panduriform, 4 to 6 cm. (or up<br />

to 17 cm.?) long, 2.5 to 4 cm. wide (or wider?), 3-lobed middle lobe<br />

much elongate, 1.5 to 2 cm. wide, abruptly acuminate, often slightly<br />

narrowed to base, the lateral lobes more or less dependent, round<br />

or slightly angular, 3-5-nerved, glandular-denticulate, coriaceous,<br />

bright green, sublustrous above; peduncles solitary, up to 4 cm.<br />

long; bracts 2 to 3 cm. long, 1 to 1.5 cm. wide, deeply 2-3-pinnatisect,<br />

the ultimate filiform segments gland-tipped; sepals lanceolate or<br />

ovate-lanceolate, about 1.5 cm. long, 1 cm. wide, obtuse, dorsally<br />

awned just below apex, the awn 2 to 2.5 mm. long; petals ovateoblong,<br />

slightly shorter than sepals; corona filaments in 5 series,<br />

those of the 2 outer filiform, 8 to 10 mm. long, those of the 3 inner<br />

series capillary, 1 to 1.5 mm. long; operculum membranous, minutely<br />

denticulate; limen cup-shaped; ovary ovoid, glabrous; fruit globose,<br />

1.5 to 2 cm. in diameter, "bright-red and shining when ripe"; seeds<br />

oblong, about 4 mm. long, 2 mm. wide, reticulate.<br />
