Stem softly pilosulous with hairs up to 1 mm. long; leaves hastate<br />

or subhastate (midnerve: lateral nerves, 5:3-4; middle lobe oblonglanceolate,<br />

acuminate, the lateral lobes ovate-lanceolate, usually<br />

bilobate, acute or subacute), crenulate, pilosulous; bracts 3 to 3.5 cm.<br />

long at post-anthesis, the ultimate segments not closely interwoven;<br />

flowers 2.5 to 3 cm. wide, pale purple; ovary glabrous; fruit 2.5-3 cm.<br />

in diameter.<br />

TYPE LOCALITY: Lake Managua, near Managua, Nicaragua.<br />

DISTRIBUTION: Salvador and Nicaragua.<br />

SALVADOR: Renson 259 (N). Department of San Salvador,<br />

Standley 22608 (N), 22763 (N), 23278 (N).<br />

NICARAGUA: Hart (Trinidad Herb. 5495; T). Lake Managua,<br />

near Managua, Maxon 7219 (N, type); Gamier 917 (N). Corinto,<br />

Tonduz in 1921 (N).<br />

This and two other varieties in Mexico and Central America<br />

often have the basal lobes bilobate, so that the leaves appear 5-lobed.<br />

The pubescence of this variety is rather similar to that of var. gossypifolia,<br />

and the large, purplish flowers are suggestive of certain other<br />

varieties in this region.<br />

Stem slender, glabrous; leaves subhastate (midnerve: lateral<br />

nerves, 5:3, the basal lobes oblong in general outline, subobtuse,<br />

usually bilobate), hirsutulous above, pilosulous beneath; bracts<br />

about 2 cm. long at anthesis, the ultimate segments not closely<br />

interwoven; ovary glabrous.<br />

TYPE LOCALITY: Progreso, Yucatan, Mexico.<br />

DISTRIBUTION: Known only from the State of Yucatan, Mexico.<br />

MEXICO: Yucatan: Gaumer 23979 (F, N), 24251 (F, Gen, N).<br />

Progreso, Steere 3021 (N), 3022 (N, type).<br />
