This and the following seven species have relatively small,
dissitate
bracts and a more or less plicate operculum, characters suggestive
of the subgenus Plectostemma. The large, showy flowers, the
corona, and the limen indicate a closer relationship with Granadilla.
Possibly these eight species should be placed in a separate subgenus,
but certain considerations make this seem inadvisable: P. Giberti,
which surely is closely related to P. naviculata, has a plicate operculum,
with a fringe of filaments attached on the outside, but the
bracts are verticillate, foliaceous, and borne close to the base of the
flower; in other species of Granadilla the margin of the operculum is
slightly crinkled.
Passiflora Loudoni, a horticultural species, is probably a hybrid
between P. kermesina and P. racemosa.
