This species is common in Panama at low elevations, but apparently<br />

rare in regions to the north and south. Usually the leaves are<br />

entire, but plants with some of the lower leaves 3-lobed are occasionally<br />

found.<br />

Plant glabrous nearly throughout; stem terete, stout; stipules<br />

ovate-lanceolate, 2 to 3 cm. long, 1.5 to 2.5 cm. wide, acute or<br />

abruptly acuminate, cordate at base, minutely serrulate-denticulate;<br />

petioles up to 10 cm. long, biglandular at apex, the glands saucershaped,<br />

2 to 2.5 mm. long, stipitate; leaves 10 to 15 cm. long, 10 to<br />

18 cm. wide, cordate-ovate or usually 3-lobed to about middle (lobes<br />

ovate or oblong-ovate, up to 7 cm. wide, subequal, obtuse), deeply<br />

cordate at base (basal lobes usually overlapping), minutely denticulate,<br />

thick-membranous, often lustrous above, glaucescent beneath;<br />

peduncles up to 5 cm. long; bracts ovate, 4.5 to 7 cm. long, 3 to 5.5<br />

cm. wide, rounded or acutish at apex, glandular-serrulate, free,<br />

united at very base only, glabrous except for a band of gray tomentum<br />

on inside near margin; flowers up to 10 cm. wide; calyx tube<br />

campanulate; sepals oblong-lanceolate, 1 to 1.5 cm. wide, obtuse,<br />

ecorniculate, green without, densely spotted with deep purple within;<br />

petals oblong-lanceolate, 2.5 to 3 cm. long, 1 to 1.2 cm. wide, obtuse,<br />

purplish; corona 3-ranked, the 2 outer ranks filamentose, the filaments<br />

banded with purple and white in lower half, with blue and<br />

white in upper half, the outer filaments subulate, 1<br />

to 1.5 cm. long,<br />

the inner ligulate, 2.5 to 3 cm. long, these followed by an erect,<br />

purple membrane about 2 mm. high, minutely denticulate; operculum<br />

membranous, horizontally spreading inward, minutely crenulate<br />

at margin; limen erect, adnate to gynophore; ovary ovoid.<br />
