In the type specimens of P. securiclata and P. retrorsa the flowers
are detached, and an accurate description of the inflorescence has not
been possible until the more adequate material collected by the
National Geographic Society's expedition to Venezuela became
available. There is a general resemblance between this species
and P. spinosa, but the leaves are much blunter and of thinner texture
and the corona filaments are dilated.
