Tree, glabrous throughout, except the ovary; petioles up to 3 cm.<br />

long; leaves oblong-obovate, 10 to 15 cm. long, 5 to 10 cm. wide (or<br />

up to 25 cm. long, 15 cm. wide), subacute or slightly emarginate at<br />

apex, rounded, often slightly oblique at base, prominently penninerved<br />

(midnerve biglandular on under surface at base), membranous,<br />

glaucescent beneath; peduncles up to 4 cm. long, slender, once<br />

dichotomous, the undivided portion and the branches subequal;<br />

flowers white; calyx tube broadly campanulate, 1 to 1.2 cm. long,<br />

0.8 to 1 cm. wide at throat; sepals lanceolate or oblong-lanceolate,<br />

2.5 to 3 cm. long, 0.8 to 1 cm. wide, obtuse; petals 2 to 2.5 cm. long;<br />

corona filaments in 3 or 4 series, the outermost linear-spatulate or<br />

slightly dolabriform, about 1.3 cm. long, those of the inner 2 or 3<br />

series broadly linear,<br />

2 mm. long; operculum filamentose nearly to<br />

base; ovary sericeo-tomentose; fruit broadly ovoid, 4 cm. long, 2.5<br />

cm. wide, glabrous, yellow, red-maculate.<br />

TYPE LOCALITY: State of Merida, Venezuela, 2,237 meters<br />

altitude.<br />

DISTRIBUTION: Mountains of western Venezuela.<br />

VENEZUELA: Aragua: Colonia Tovar, Fendler 2548 (Bo, Brux,<br />

G, Gen, Mo). Merida: Linden 1409 (BM, Gen, P, type, V); Funck<br />

& Sehlim 1215 (BM, Bo, Gen, K, P).<br />

This, the only Venezuelan species of Euastrophea, is distinguished<br />

from its nearest Colombian relative, P. ocanensis, by a more deeply<br />

cut operculum, smaller flowers, and slenderer peduncles.<br />

Tree, 2 to 4 meters high, glabrous throughout except the ovary;<br />

petioles 1 to 2 cm. long; leaves obovate or elliptic-oblong, 7 to 15 cm.<br />

long, 4 to 7 cm. wide, rounded and emarginate at apex, obtuse at<br />

base, penninerved (nerves usually yellowish beneath, the midnerve<br />

biglandular at base, the principal lateral nerves 8 to 11 to a side),<br />

membranous, yellowish green above, usually glaucous beneath;<br />

peduncles simple or bifurcate, 1 to 2.5 cm. long including branches;<br />

bracts narrowly linear, 1.5 to 2 mm. long; flowers white; calyx tube<br />

broadly campanulate, 5 to 7 mm. long; sepals narrowly oblong, 2 to<br />

2.5 cm. long, 5 to 6 mm. wide, obtuse; petals obovate-oblong, slightly<br />

shorter than the sepals; corona filaments in 3 or 4 series, the outermost<br />

laterally flattened, subdolabriform, about 1 cm. long, attenuate
