Plant scandent or subscandent, the tendrils usually well developed;<br />
stem terete, sulcate below, glabrous or minutely puberulous<br />
above; stipules setaceous, soon deciduous; petioles 0.5 to 2 cm. long,<br />
often reflexed, obscurely biglandular at apex; leaves oblong, 5 to 10<br />
cm. long, 3 to 5 cm. wide, rounded or acutish at apex, rounded at<br />
base, reticulate-veined, subcoriaceous, glabrous and lustrous above,<br />
glabrous or minutely puberulent beneath; peduncles 1 to 1.5 cm.<br />
long, reflexed, articulate below middle; calyx tube cylindric-campanulate,<br />
5 to 8 mm. long, about 5 mm. wide at throat, conspicuously<br />
5-angled, puberulent; sepals oblong, 1 to 1.5 cm. long, 4 to 6 mm.<br />
wide, obtuse; petals similar to the sepals; corona filaments in 2 series,<br />
the outer subdolabriform, about 1 cm. long, ligulate below, dilated<br />
above middle, verrucose along inner margin at point of dilation, the<br />
inner narrowly linear,<br />
clavate; operculum borne at middle of tube,<br />
erect, about 2 mm. high, filamentose in upper half; ovary oblong,<br />
tomentulous; fruit globose, about 4 cm. in diameter, the ex9carp<br />
coriaceous, brittle, yellowish; seeds ovate-oblong, about 5 mm. long,<br />
reticulate.<br />
TYPE LOCALITY: State of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.<br />

DISTRIBUTION: Known positively only from the State of Rio<br />
de Janeiro, Brazil.<br />

The pendulous flowers, with a definitely 5-angled tube, constitute<br />
the most striking character by which this species may be recognized.<br />
It is very close to P. rhamnifolia; all the specimens I have seen have<br />
smaller leaves, however.<br />
