DISTRIBUTION: Probably confined to the Federal District, northcentral<br />

Venezuela.<br />

VENEZUELA: Federal District: Between La Guaira and Rio<br />

Grande, Curran & Haman 1035 (G, type of P. physocalymma, N).<br />

Caracas, collector? (BW, type of P. caracasana); Jacquin (Gen, V,<br />

type); Ernst 11 86 (EM).<br />

Though closely related to P. serrulata, this species seems sufficiently<br />

distinct to justify recognition. The lateral leaf lobes are<br />

proportionately longer and the bracts are long-tapering at the apex.<br />

Plant glabrous throughout; stem very slender,<br />

almost filiform,<br />

terete; stipules setaceous, 3 to 5 mm. long; petioles 5 to 10 mm. long,<br />

terete, glandless; leaves lanceolate, 3.5 to 5 cm. long, 1.5 to 2.3 cm.<br />

wide, acute at apex, rounded (or slightly emarginate) and subpeltate<br />

at base, 1-nerved (principal lateral nerves about 10 pairs), entire,<br />

thick-coriaceous,<br />

cartilaginous-thickened at margin; peduncles solitary,<br />

1 to 2 cm. long, slender; bracts cordate-lanceolate, 5 to 7 mm.<br />

long, 4 to 5 mm. wide, acute, mucronulate, serrulate at base,<br />

1-nerved, strongly reticulate-veined, borne about 1 mm. below base<br />

of flower; flowers 1<br />

to 3 cm. wide; calyx tube broadly campanulate;<br />

sepals oblong, about 6 mm. long, 2 mm. wide, obtuse, corniculate<br />

just below apex, green without, white within; petals slightly smaller<br />

than sepals, white; corona filamentose, the filaments slightly shorter<br />

than the sepals; ovary subglobose.<br />

TYPE LOCALITY: Brazil, "in silvulis c. 2200 m.," Serra do Itatiaia.<br />
