lanate, the tendrils often wanting; stipules semi-annular about stem,<br />

deeply cleft into filiform, gland-tipped divisions; petioles 5 to 15 mm.<br />

long, densely lanate, destitute of true petiolar glands but bearing<br />

numerous gland-tipped hairs; leaves orbicular in outline, usually 0.5<br />

to 2 cm. long and wide, rarely up to 3.5 cm., 3-lobed (lobes subequal,<br />

rounded), 3-5-nerved, densely glandular-ciliate, lanate with soft,<br />

white to dark brown wool, glutinous; peduncles 1 to 2.5 cm. long;<br />

bracts up to 4 cm. long, 2.5 cm. wide, bipinnatisect, hirsute, copiously<br />

covered with gland-tipped hairs; flowers 2.5 to 3 cm. wide; sepals<br />

ovate-lanceolate, 1 to 1.3 cm. long, 6 mm. wide at base, densely<br />

velvety-pubescent without, glabrous within; petals 5 to 7 mm. long,<br />

4 mm. wide, obovate, glabrous; corona filaments in several series,<br />

those of the outer 2 about 1 cm. long, filiform, the succeeding series<br />

consisting of minute, capillary threads 1.5 to 2 mm. long; operculum<br />

membranous, the apex minutely denticulate; limen cupuliform, 1.5<br />

mm. high, entire, recurved at margin; ovary subglobose, sericeous;<br />

fruit subglobose, 2.5 cm. in diameter, densely sericeous; seeds oblong,<br />

minutely 3-toothed at apex, truncate at base, flattened, 5 mm. long,<br />

2.5 mm. wide, reticulate with about 25 meshes to each face.<br />

TYPE LOCALITY: Santa Margarita Island, Lower California.<br />

(The type locality originally given for this was Santa Maria Bay,<br />

this name having been entered on the label.)<br />

This plant has the dense indument of P. Palmeri and P. arida.<br />

Like P. Palmeri it is a low shrub' with sprawling branches, and is<br />

very viscous. The flowers are smaller, with a shorter gynophore and<br />

proportionately longer outer corona filaments. The leaves are<br />

smaller than in P. Palmeri, and the indument of the stem is densely<br />

matted, almost lanate, not of soft, straight hairs. It is distinguished<br />

from P. arida by its shrubby habit, extreme viscosity, and usually<br />

small leaves with suborbicular lobes.<br />

Dr. I. M. Johnston has supplied the writer with valuable notes,<br />

made from field observations, on the species of this subgenus in
