Color Management Background Color Science Object When light waves strike an object, the object’s surface absorbs some of the spectrum’s energy, while other parts of the spectrum are reflected back from the object. Three types of objects: Reflective Object Transmissive Object Emissive Object Observer Can see ~10 million different colors • MUNSELL Book of Colors – 1,225 • PANTONE Matching System – 1,200 Color vision over saturation • Best color decisions are made in the first 20 seconds of looking at a color Color Blindness Simultaneous Contrast Color Blindness / Deficiency • Monochromat • no functioning cones – completely color blind • Genetic, 10 out of a million • Dichromat • Missing one cone – can see some colors • More males than females (can carry the gene) • Statistics • 1 out of 12 males are color deficient • 1 out of 250 females are color deficient Chameleon Effect Eyes can play tricks on us • Simultaneous Contrast - surrounding colors affect target color • Chameleon effect – after image due to over saturation • Metamerism - colors that appear to match under one lighting condition, but not another • Caused by different wavelengths mixing to produce the same pattern of response in the 3 cone receptors 1 - 2 CS600 System Controller
