i. Weed<strong>in</strong>g<br />

Eggplant is slow to establish and can not compete with aggressive weeds. Weeds also<br />

harbor damag<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>sects and diseases.<br />

Weeds are controlled by physical methods. Hand weed<strong>in</strong>g, cultivation, and mulch<strong>in</strong>g are<br />

quite common <strong>in</strong> small vegetable farms. Only shallow cultivation is necessary.<br />

Mulch<strong>in</strong>g with plastic mulch effectively controls weeds and reduces labor needs. Natural<br />

<strong>org</strong>anic mulches, such as rice straw, will conserve moisture and add <strong>org</strong>anic matter to the<br />

soil.<br />

j. Harvest<strong>in</strong>g<br />

Harvest eggplant when the fruit is 2/3 maximum size for the variety, before fruit hardens,<br />

or when the fruit shows streak of unusual color, or about 2 weeks after fruit set.<br />

Harvest<strong>in</strong>g can be done 2 or 3 times a week so the fruit will not become over-mature.<br />

More frequent harvest<strong>in</strong>g can reduce damage from borers.<br />
