A. INSECT PESTS OF VEGETABLE CROPS<br />

1. Aphids<br />

Family: Aphididae<br />

Plants attacked: Most vegetables<br />

Type of damage: Aphids suck plant juices, may <strong>in</strong>ject<br />

tox<strong>in</strong>s <strong>in</strong>to the plant, secrete a sticky substance called<br />

honeydew, or transmit certa<strong>in</strong> plant viruses.<br />

Remember: Alpids are usually found <strong>in</strong> colonies on the<br />

underside of leaves. They may be w<strong>in</strong>ged but are<br />

usually w<strong>in</strong>gless. Aphids are capable of rapidly <strong>in</strong>creas<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> numbers. Lady beetles and<br />

lacew<strong>in</strong>gs are effective predators of aphids.<br />

2. Flea Beetles<br />

Family: Chrysomelidae<br />

Plants attacked: Many vegetables, especially crucifers<br />

(cabbage, broccoli, etc.) and solanaceous crops (tomato,<br />

potato, eggplant, etc.)<br />
