The field should be well-prepared and the soil must be well pulverized and leveled. If the<br />
soil pH is lower than 5.8 apply lime one month before plant<strong>in</strong>g at the rate of 1,000- 3,000<br />
kgs/hectare depend<strong>in</strong>g on the soil acidity.<br />
d. Plant<strong>in</strong>g<br />
There are two options <strong>in</strong> plant<strong>in</strong>g bitter gourd, direct seed<strong>in</strong>g and transplant<strong>in</strong>g.<br />
Direct Seed<strong>in</strong>g<br />
Sow the seeds 2 cm deep at a spac<strong>in</strong>g of 30 cm between plants and 300 cm between<br />
rows. Other recommended spac<strong>in</strong>g are: 200 cm x 50 cm; and 100cms x 100 cm. The<br />
recommended spac<strong>in</strong>g will give you 10,000 plants/hectare or one plant/sqm.<br />
Transplant<strong>in</strong>g<br />
Sow the seeds 2 cm deep <strong>in</strong> any k<strong>in</strong>d of small plastic bag or small conta<strong>in</strong>er us<strong>in</strong>g a<br />
pott<strong>in</strong>g mix that has good water hold<strong>in</strong>g capacity and good dra<strong>in</strong>age. Water the seedl<strong>in</strong>g<br />
thoroughly every morn<strong>in</strong>g to ma<strong>in</strong>ta<strong>in</strong> a moist but not wet soil. Grow the seedl<strong>in</strong>gs <strong>in</strong><br />
full sun with adequate protection aga<strong>in</strong>st heavy ra<strong>in</strong>s, w<strong>in</strong>ds and stray animals. Harden<br />
the seedl<strong>in</strong>gs by reduc<strong>in</strong>g the water<strong>in</strong>g three days before transplant<strong>in</strong>g. At<br />
transplant<strong>in</strong>g, remove the plastic bag or conta<strong>in</strong>er with m<strong>in</strong>imum disturbance to the<br />
roots. Do not delay transplant<strong>in</strong>g too long beyond the first true leaf stage. Transplant<br />
on cloudy days or late <strong>in</strong> the afternoon. Transplant seedl<strong>in</strong>gs <strong>in</strong>to the field at spac<strong>in</strong>g<br />
similar to those used for the direct seed<strong>in</strong>g method.<br />
