FOREWORD<br />

<strong>Vegetables</strong> are a rich and <strong>in</strong>expensive source of vitam<strong>in</strong>s and nutrients. Filip<strong>in</strong>os are<br />

major consumers of vegetables, and vegetable gardens are commonly found <strong>in</strong> the<br />

backyards of many Filip<strong>in</strong>o households. Vegetable production is very popular <strong>in</strong> the<br />

Philipp<strong>in</strong>es. In fact, the Philipp<strong>in</strong>es is considered as the second largest vegetable producer<br />

<strong>in</strong> Southeast Asia <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g Australia. However, high vegetable production costs, for<br />

example of commercial fertilizers and pesticides as well as the unsusta<strong>in</strong>able practices<br />

such as monocropp<strong>in</strong>g, make vegetable grow<strong>in</strong>g unnecessarily expensive and pose a great<br />

danger to our health and the environment.<br />

This Resource Manual on grow<strong>in</strong>g vegetables us<strong>in</strong>g Integrated Production and Pest<br />

Management (<strong>IPPM</strong>) methods is part of a series of tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g and learn<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>struments<br />

developed and published by World Education (INGO) Philipp<strong>in</strong>es, Inc. This manual was<br />

produced to promote better understand<strong>in</strong>g of the vegetable ecosystem as well as to teach<br />

the healthy and economical production practices for a particular vegetable crop.<br />

The manual is a compilation of <strong>in</strong>formation on vegetable production that will facilitate<br />

grow<strong>in</strong>g vegetables us<strong>in</strong>g <strong>IPPM</strong> methods. The topics <strong>in</strong>cluded here complement a set of<br />

learn<strong>in</strong>g competencies identified for <strong>IPPM</strong> <strong>in</strong> vegetable grow<strong>in</strong>g. The contents were put<br />

together from different sources and were carefully tailored to suit <strong>IPPM</strong> facilitators.<br />

This was developed primarily as a reference for <strong>IPPM</strong> facilitators and is <strong>in</strong>tended as<br />

supplementary material to facilitate and stimulate learn<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> a Field School.<br />

The development and publication of this manual was made possible through the support<br />

given by the Royal Netherlands Embassy and the Philipp<strong>in</strong>es Department of Education<br />

(DepEd).<br />
