Caterpillars make up a large part of the diet of vespid wasps. Large<br />

caterpillars are chewed up and carried away piece by piece.<br />

Caterpillars are also fed to develop<strong>in</strong>g larvae of predatory wasps.<br />

Name: Euborellia sp.<br />

Family: Carc<strong>in</strong>ophoridae<br />

Order: Dermaptera<br />

Members of this order are commonly referred to as earwigs.<br />

Although some species are plant feeders, others are voracious<br />

predators. They hide <strong>in</strong> the soil or plant parts until night time<br />

when they search plants for eggs, larvae and nymphs of smaller<br />

soft-bodied <strong>in</strong>sects.<br />

SPIDERS<br />

Spiders comprise a large and very diverse group of beneficial arthropods <strong>in</strong> vegetable<br />

crops and soybeans. Their predatory habits and abundance make them very important <strong>in</strong><br />

controll<strong>in</strong>g populations of pests and keep<strong>in</strong>g them from reach<strong>in</strong>g damag<strong>in</strong>g levels. Their<br />

behavior <strong>in</strong> captur<strong>in</strong>g prey varies with the species. Many are active at night. They<br />

actively stalk their prey while others wait for prey to come close before mov<strong>in</strong>g for the<br />

kill. Even though the spider fauna is rich and diverse <strong>in</strong> Southeast Asia, only a few<br />

species are presented here.<br />

Order: Araneae<br />

This adult female garden spider secures her elongated and light<br />

brown egg cocoon <strong>in</strong> the center of the web. Like other garden<br />

spiders A. trifasciata captures her prey us<strong>in</strong>g a web.<br />

Name: Leucauge decorata (Blackwall)<br />

Family: Tetragnathidae<br />

Order: Araneae<br />

Tetragnathid spiders catch their prey through<br />

their webs but may hunt their prey or they<br />

may lie <strong>in</strong> wait for an unsuspect<strong>in</strong>g victim to<br />

pass nearby.<br />
