small holes <strong>in</strong> leaves. The damage can be particularly serious on small plants. The corn<br />

flea beetle can transmit a bacterium that causes Stewarts wilt on sweet corn.<br />

Characteristics: Flea beetles come <strong>in</strong> various sizes and colors, but they all have enlarged<br />

h<strong>in</strong>d legs that allow them to jump like a flea when disturbed.<br />

3. White Grubs<br />

Family: Scarabaeidae<br />

Plants attacked: Most vegetables<br />

Type of damage: Grubs feed on the roots or other<br />

underground parts of most vegetables. Damage<br />

typically consists of surface scars and round gouges.<br />

Characteristics: Grubs are mostly a problem <strong>in</strong><br />

fields follow<strong>in</strong>g sod. Weedy gardens are also<br />

attractive to oviposit<strong>in</strong>g beetles.<br />

4. Leafhoppers<br />

Family: Cicadellidae<br />

Plants attacked: Many vegetables, <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g bean,<br />

potato, eggplant, celery, beet, and tomato.<br />

Type of damage: Leafhoppers suck plant juices from<br />

the underside of leaves. Potato leafhoppers may cause<br />

a condition called tipburn or hopperburn on bean,<br />

potato, eggplant, and rhubarb. Beet leafhoppers<br />

transmit a disease called curly top to beet.<br />

Remember: Leafhoppers can <strong>in</strong>crease to extremely large numbers <strong>in</strong> a short time, but<br />

generally are very susceptible to <strong>in</strong>secticides.<br />

5. Japanese Beetle<br />

Popilia japonica,<br />

Family: Scarabaeidae<br />

Plants attacked: Many vegetables, fruits, field<br />

crops, ornamentals and turf grass.<br />

Type of damage: Larvae feed on roots of turf grass<br />

and other plants. Adults feed on leaves, flowers, and<br />

fruit of many types of plants.<br />
