ORGANIC is a material (e.g. pesticide) whose molecules conta<strong>in</strong> carbon and<br />

hydrogen atoms. Also may refer to plants or animals which are grown without<br />

the use of synthetic fertilizers or pesticides.<br />

OVOID or egg-shaped; hav<strong>in</strong>g the solid form of an egg.<br />

OVULE is the female reproductive cell of flower<strong>in</strong>g plants and cone-bear<strong>in</strong>g plants.<br />

After the ovule is fertilized by the male pollen, the ovule becomes a seed.<br />

PALMATE leaf has a hand-like structure. It has more than three lobes that branch from a<br />

s<strong>in</strong>gle po<strong>in</strong>t at the base of the leaf. Refer to Figure 11.<br />

PALMATE VENATION has the ma<strong>in</strong> ve<strong>in</strong>s aris<strong>in</strong>g from a po<strong>in</strong>t at the base of the leaf.<br />

PARASITE is an <strong>org</strong>anism which uses its host for food and/or shelter. A parasite gives<br />

its host noth<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> return and often makes it sick or even kills the host. Termites are a<br />

parasite of many trees.<br />

PARASITISM is a relationship between two <strong>org</strong>anisms <strong>in</strong> which one <strong>org</strong>anism benefits<br />

at the other <strong>org</strong>anism's expense. Lice are an example of a parasite that affects many<br />

animals; termites are parasites that are destructive to many trees. Parasitism is a type of<br />

symbiosis.<br />

PARTED (also called cleft) leaf is one <strong>in</strong> which the marg<strong>in</strong>s<br />

between the irregular teeth go more than halfway to the midrib.<br />

PEAT is a type of soil that is composed of <strong>in</strong>completely<br />

decomposed plant material that water-logged and low <strong>in</strong> oxygen.<br />

PEDICEL is plant stalk that attaches a s<strong>in</strong>gle flower or fruit to the<br />

ma<strong>in</strong> branch of the <strong>in</strong>florescence.<br />

PERENNIAL has a life cycle that lives for more than two years.<br />

Perennials usually flower each year.<br />
