18. Spotted Cucumber Beetle<br />

Family: Chrysomelidae<br />

Plants attacked: Cucurbits, bean, pea, potato,<br />

beet, asparagus, eggplant, tomato, corn, cabbage<br />

Type of damage: Larvae feed on roots of corn, beans, alfalfa, and many grasses. Adults<br />

feed on foliage and also transmit bacterial wilt of cucurbits to cucumber and cantaloupe.<br />

19. Squash Bug<br />

Anasa tristis<br />

Family: Coreidae<br />

Plants attacked: All cucurbits, but<br />

especially squash and pumpk<strong>in</strong><br />

Type of attack: Nymphs and adults suck<br />

plant juices caus<strong>in</strong>g leaves to wilt and die.<br />

They also feed on develop<strong>in</strong>g fruit and<br />

may also transmit a disease <strong>org</strong>anism that<br />

causes yellow v<strong>in</strong>e.<br />

Remember: Squash bugs are usually found <strong>in</strong> colonies. Destroy<strong>in</strong>g crop refuse may<br />

reduce the number of squash bugs over w<strong>in</strong>ter and lessen problems the follow<strong>in</strong>g year.<br />

20. Squash V<strong>in</strong>e Borer<br />

Melittia cucurbitae<br />

Family: Sesiidae<br />

Plants attacked: Squash, pumpk<strong>in</strong>, gourd,<br />

cucumber<br />

Type of damage: Larvae bore <strong>in</strong>to the v<strong>in</strong>e,<br />

caus<strong>in</strong>g a sudden wilt<strong>in</strong>g of a v<strong>in</strong>e or an entire plant.<br />

Remember: Plants need to be protected with<br />

<strong>in</strong>secticides or screens when v<strong>in</strong>es beg<strong>in</strong> to run.<br />

Once <strong>in</strong>side the v<strong>in</strong>e, the borers are impervious to<br />

<strong>in</strong>secticides.<br />
