is made from the Penicillium mold (Alexander Flem<strong>in</strong>g discovered penicill<strong>in</strong> <strong>in</strong> 1928).<br />

Classification: K<strong>in</strong>gdom Fungi, Division Eumycota (septate fungi), Classes<br />

Hyphomycetes, Oomycetes, and Zygomycetes.<br />

MONOCOT is a type of flower<strong>in</strong>g plant (an angiosperm) whose seed has one embryonic<br />

leaf (cotyledon). The leaves of monocots generally have parallel venation (the ve<strong>in</strong>s are<br />

parallel to one another). The roots of monocots are usually fibrous and the flower parts<br />

are often <strong>in</strong> multiples of three. Refer to Figure 9.<br />

MONOCULTURE is a system of agriculture <strong>in</strong> which a s<strong>in</strong>gle type of crop is grown <strong>in</strong><br />

an area.<br />

MONOECIOUS plants have the male and female reproductive <strong>org</strong>ans on the same plant.<br />

MORPHOLOGY is the study of the external structure of <strong>org</strong>anisms (for example, the<br />

arrangement of leaves on a plant).<br />

MULCH is a layer of material placed on the soil surface to prevent weed growth.<br />

MYCORRHIZAE is a fungus that grows <strong>in</strong> a symbiotic relationship with the roots (or<br />

rhizoids) of a plant.<br />

NATURAL ENEMIES are Predators, parasites, or pathogens that are considered<br />

beneficial because they attack and kill <strong>org</strong>anisms that we normally consider to be pests.<br />

NECTAR is the sweet liquid produced by many flowers. Nectar attracts many <strong>in</strong>sects<br />

(like butterflies and bees) who go from flower to flower sipp<strong>in</strong>g nectar, caus<strong>in</strong>g the<br />

poll<strong>in</strong>ation of the flowers.<br />

NITROGEN FIXING. Some bacteria (rhizobia) are nitrogen-fix<strong>in</strong>g; they transform<br />

nitrogen gas <strong>in</strong> the atmosphere <strong>in</strong>to a form that can be used by plants.<br />

NODE is a part of the stem of a plant from which a leaf, branch, or aerial root grows.<br />

NODULE is a small, rounded knot on some legum<strong>in</strong>ous plant roots which conta<strong>in</strong><br />

nitrogen-fix<strong>in</strong>g bacteria (rhizobia). For example, peanut plant roots have nodules.<br />

NOXIOUS WEEDS are plant that is considered by local authorities to be a problem,<br />

grow<strong>in</strong>g where it is not wanted.<br />

NUTRIENT is a chemical that an <strong>org</strong>anism needs to <strong>in</strong>gest <strong>in</strong> order to survive (like fats,<br />

carbohydrates, vitam<strong>in</strong>s, m<strong>in</strong>erals, etc.).<br />

ORDER. In L<strong>in</strong>nean classification, an order is a group of related or similar <strong>org</strong>anisms.<br />

An order conta<strong>in</strong>s one or more families. A group of similar orders forms a class.
