i. Pest and Diseases<br />

Pests attack<strong>in</strong>g cucumber are beetles, leaf folders, aphids, thrips, and mites. If pest<br />

population is high, it will significantly affect the yield of cucumber. Powdery mildew<br />

and downy mildew are the common diseases that affect cucumber.<br />

j. Pest Control<br />

Crop rotation and the use of resistant varieties and disease-free seeds are the most<br />

economical methods of pest control. Mulch<strong>in</strong>g with straw or plastic will greatly help <strong>in</strong><br />

controll<strong>in</strong>g weeds and is very beneficial from the standpo<strong>in</strong>t of moisture conservation and<br />

stability. Plastic also produces an earlier crop.<br />

k. Weed<strong>in</strong>g<br />

Weeds cause considerable yield loss if not controlled early <strong>in</strong> the season.<br />

<strong>in</strong>cludes light cultivation, spot hand-weed<strong>in</strong>g, tillage and mulch<strong>in</strong>g.<br />

Control<br />

l. Harvest<strong>in</strong>g<br />

First harvest<strong>in</strong>g is expected <strong>in</strong> 35 days after emergence.<br />
