GUARD CELL is a crescent-shape that control the size of<br />

the open<strong>in</strong>g of the stoma us<strong>in</strong>g turgor pressure. This<br />

changes the amount of water vapor and other gases that can<br />

enter and leave the plant. Refer to Figure 5.<br />

HABITAT is a space (which <strong>in</strong>cludes food, water and<br />

shelter) suitable for the survival and reproduction of an <strong>org</strong>anism.<br />

HEAD is the <strong>in</strong>florescence of many grass plants, <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g small gra<strong>in</strong>s.<br />

HECTARE is metric unit of area. A hectare is equal to 10,000 square meters.<br />

HERB is a seed plant that does not have a woody stem. Every year, herbaceous plants<br />

produce a completely new stem. Herbaceous plants are generally short lived and<br />

relatively short (compared to woody plants). Some herbaceous plants <strong>in</strong>clude the banana,<br />

grasses, and forbs.<br />

HERBIVORES (also called primary consumers) are animals that eat plants.<br />

HERMAPHRODITE is a plant that has both female and male reproductive <strong>org</strong>ans.<br />

HILUM is the scar on a seed coat at the location where it was attached to the plant's stalk<br />

dur<strong>in</strong>g development.<br />

HORMONE is a chemical <strong>in</strong> plants (and other <strong>org</strong>anisms) that regulates the plant's<br />

growth, reproduction, and other functions.<br />

HORTICULTURE is the science of grow<strong>in</strong>g fruits, vegetables, flowers, and ornamental<br />

plants.<br />

HOST is an <strong>org</strong>anism which a parasite uses for food and/or shelter.<br />

HUMUS is the rich, <strong>org</strong>anic portion of the soil. It is composed of decayed plant and<br />

animal materials.<br />

HYBRID is the offspr<strong>in</strong>g of two <strong>org</strong>anisms that belong to different breeds, varieties,<br />

species or genera.<br />

HYPOCOTYL is the part of the stem of a sprout<strong>in</strong>g plant that is above the root and<br />

below the stalk of the cotyledons (seed leaves).<br />

IMPERFECT FLOWER has either male (stamen) and female (ovary) reproductive<br />

<strong>org</strong>ans on the same flower, but not both (compare with perfect flowers).<br />

INCOMPLETE FLOWER is miss<strong>in</strong>g one of the four major parts of the flower, the<br />

stamen, pistil, petals, or sepals.
