C. CUCURBITACEAE FAMILY<br />
1. CUCUMBER<br />
a. Introduction<br />
The cucumber (Cucumis sativus) is a member of the<br />
gourd family (Cucurbitaceae) as are melons, squash<br />
and pumpk<strong>in</strong>s. Cucumber is a well known fruit with<br />
its many uses <strong>in</strong> a variety of food preparation. Pickled<br />
cucumber is a universal <strong>in</strong>gredient <strong>in</strong> salads, dishes,<br />
dips, sauces and gravies. Fresh cucumber is also<br />
widely used <strong>in</strong> the preparation of sandwiches and<br />
burgers and may be eaten raw or cooked. When eaten<br />
regularly, it helps cure kidney ailments. The fruit<br />
extracts are used <strong>in</strong> the preparation of cosmetics and<br />
medic<strong>in</strong>e as well.<br />
b. Climate and Soil Requirement<br />
A sandy loam to clay loam soil, high <strong>in</strong> <strong>org</strong>anic matter, is ideal for grow<strong>in</strong>g cucumber.<br />
Soils that cake or crust result <strong>in</strong> poorer stands. The soil should have good dra<strong>in</strong>age and<br />
should be naturally fertile. An ideal soil pH is 6.0 to 6.5.<br />
Cucumber is a warm season crop grown year-round locally. The optimum temperature<br />
for growth is about 30 o C, while the optimum night temperature for growth is 18-21 o C.<br />
