INDEHISCENT is a fruit that rema<strong>in</strong>s closed at maturity is <strong>in</strong>dehiscent. Nuts, acorns,<br />

sunflowers, gra<strong>in</strong>s, and maple pods are examples of <strong>in</strong>dehiscent fruits.<br />

INDIGENOUS <strong>org</strong>anism is one that lives naturally <strong>in</strong> a particular region and was not<br />

<strong>in</strong>troduced there by man.<br />

INFLORESCENCE is the type of flower <strong>in</strong> which there is more that one flower <strong>in</strong> a<br />

s<strong>in</strong>gle structure.<br />

INORGANIC means conta<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g no carbon; generally used to <strong>in</strong>dicate materials (for<br />

example, fertilizers) that are of m<strong>in</strong>eral orig<strong>in</strong>.<br />

INSECTIVOROUS <strong>org</strong>anisms eat <strong>in</strong>sects. Insectivorous plants trap and digest <strong>in</strong>sects<br />

for nourishment.<br />

INTERNODE is the part of a plant's stem between two nodes is the <strong>in</strong>ternode - the<br />

distance along the stem between the leaves. Refer to Figure 1.<br />

INSECTS have exoskeletons and six legs. They evolved dur<strong>in</strong>g the<br />

Silurian Period, 438 to 408 million years ago, long before d<strong>in</strong>osaurs<br />

existed. Refer to Figure 6.<br />

JUVENILE is <strong>in</strong> an early phase of plant growth <strong>in</strong> which it <strong>in</strong>creases <strong>in</strong> size but has not<br />

yet flowered.<br />

LARVA (plural: larvae) is the immature form of <strong>in</strong>sects that develop through the process<br />

of complete metamorphosis <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g egg, several larval stages, pupa, and adult. In<br />

mites, the first-stage immature is also called a larva.<br />

LAMINA is the blade of a leaf. Refer to Figure 3<br />

LANCEOLATE leaves are shaped like a lance; they have a<br />

broad base and taper to a po<strong>in</strong>t. Refer to Figure 7.<br />

LEAF is an outgrowth of a plant that grows from a node <strong>in</strong> the<br />

stem. Most leaves are flat and conta<strong>in</strong> chloroplasts; their ma<strong>in</strong><br />

function is to make food energy through photosynthesis. The first<br />

leaf to grow from a seed is called the cotyledon. Refer to Figure<br />
