Present Weather and Climate: Average Conditions 63Dust and SnowBox 4.1How dust affects the timing and intensity of snowmeltand runoff in the Southwest is an area ofemerging understanding. During the winter andspring, wind-blown dust from lowland regionscan accumulate in the mountain snowpack (Figure4.4) (Painter et al. 2007; Steenburgh, Massey,and Painter 2012). Because dust isdarker than snow, this increasesthe amount of sunlight absorbedby the snow, leading to an earlier,more rapid snowmelt. Studies inColorado’s San Juan Mountains,for example, indicate that the durationof snowcover in the springand summer can be shortened byseveral weeks in years with largedust accumulations (Painter et al.2007; Painter et al. 2012; Skiles etal. 2012). Modeling studies suggestthat this results in a runoff with amore rapid increase, earlier peak,and reduced volume in the upperColorado River Basin (Painter et al.2010).Efforts to better understandthe spatial and year-to-year variationsin dust accumulation andcharacteristics in the mountains of the Southwestare ongoing. Better understanding of these variationswill help improve the prediction of springrunoff timing and volume, as well as projectionsof the impacts of climate change on mountainsnowpack and ecosystems.Figure 4.4 Dust-covered snow in the Dolores River headwaters,San Juan Mountains, Colorado, 19 May 2009. ENSO refers collectively to episodes of warming and cooling of theequatorial Pacific Ocean and their related atmospheric circulation changes. Warm andcool ENSO episodes are known as El Niño and La Niña, respectively. La Niña years areassociated with reduced cool-season precipitation over southern portions of the Southwestregion (Redmond and Koch 1991; Cayan, Redmond, and Riddle 1999).Winter stormsWinter storms in the Southwest can produce heavy snowfall, heavy rainfall, flooding,high winds, and large, abrupt temperature drops (Marwitz 1986; Marwitz and Toth1993; Poulos et al. 2002; Schultz et al. 2002; Steenburgh 2003; White et al. 2003; Neimanet al. 2008; Shafer and Steenburgh 2008).
