Political <strong>Science</strong><br />

Option to Liberal Arts, (AA.POL)<br />

The study of political science encompasses the human<br />

experience within the constantly changing world political<br />

system. The Political <strong>Science</strong> program provides studies in<br />

United States, foreign, and international politics, and<br />

government. Political <strong>Science</strong> courses offer a range of basic<br />

requirements for careers in law, criminal justice, corrections,<br />

business, industry, government service, teaching, public<br />

policy, political journalism, lobbying, legislative service, and<br />

political research. Students who wish to transfer to a<br />

baccalaureate program upon completion of the AA in<br />

Political <strong>Science</strong> should check the catalogs of four-year<br />

colleges and universities in order to coordinate requirements.<br />

Graduates of this program should be able to:<br />

Describe the types of governments currently part<br />

of the world political system;<br />

Describe the role of a chief executive in world<br />

political systems;<br />

Describe the role of legislatures in world<br />

political systems;<br />

Describe the judicial systems and definitions of law,<br />

justice, fairness and order;<br />

Define the role of public opinion, elections<br />

and the mass media in political systems;<br />

Describe the role of interest groups in a<br />

political system;<br />

Define the political, individual and civil rights in<br />

world political systems;<br />

Describe the methods of transferring power and<br />

authority from one leader to another in world<br />

political systems;<br />

Identify international organizations and their role<br />

in international politics;<br />

Demonstrate effective oral and written<br />

communication skills;<br />

Demonstrate effective analysis of quantitative methods;<br />

Transfer to a four-year institution in a political science<br />

program.<br />
