DHY 120 Dental Radiology 3 cr.<br />

This course integrates the didactic, laboratory,<br />

and clinical principles of dental radiography.<br />

It covers x-ray production, processing,<br />

intra- and extra-oral techniques, quality<br />

assurance, utilization of radiographic selection<br />

criteria, radiographic interpretation, radiation<br />

biology and safety, and infection control and<br />

hazardous waste disposal. It provides<br />

laboratory experiences which progress from<br />

mannequin simulation to assigned patients in<br />

order to explore clinical applications.<br />

This course provides a conceptual framework<br />

for understanding the growth and<br />

development of oral structures as well as an<br />

overview of the peri-natal events that begin<br />

their growth. It focuses on the microscopic<br />

structures of the oral tissues, growth and<br />

development of the face and oral cavity. It also<br />

covers the development of the deciduous and<br />

permanent dentition, including common disturbances<br />

and anomalies.<br />

This course focuses on information about oral<br />

physiotherapy, fluoride, treatment planning,<br />

adjunctive instrumentation, hypersensitivity,<br />

and air abrasive systems. There are examinations<br />

of case studies with respect to treatment<br />

planning, behavior modification strategies,<br />

and adult and pediatric preventive counseling.<br />

It requires clinical practice. Students must<br />

demonstrate advanced techniques of dental<br />

hygiene treatment.<br />

This course focuses on the basic concepts of<br />

the anatomy and pathology of the periodontium.<br />

It examines in depth classification,<br />

the histopathologic changes of the supporting<br />

structures of the teeth by using case-based<br />

clinical studies.<br />

This course introduces pharmacology and<br />

methods of pain control as it relates to the<br />

practice of dentistry. It focuses on adverse<br />

drug reactions, pharmacological effects, and<br />

their usual indications and contraindications. It<br />

emphasizes the clinical application of topical<br />

and local anesthesia. It discusses systemic<br />

toxicity and local complications to prepare<br />

students for the prevention and management<br />

of emergencies that may develop during<br />

treatment as well as sedation methods and<br />

general anesthesia.<br />

This course allows students the opportunity to<br />

demonstrate advanced treatment techniques<br />

modification strategies, adult and child<br />

preventive counseling, and adjunctive<br />

instrumentation.<br />

DHY 210 Periodontology II 2 cr.<br />

This course builds on the information<br />

presented in DHY 160. It focuses on current<br />

information on clinical and adjunctive home<br />

care aids, as well as a variety of treatment<br />

modalities. It also presents surgical options,<br />

including implants. It requires student case<br />

presentations which cover complete charting,<br />

review of medical and dental histories,<br />

radiographs and/or study models, record of<br />

treatment, patient compliance, and<br />

recommended maintenance schedules.<br />

DHY 220 Oral Pathology 3 cr.<br />

This course investigates the study of abnormalities<br />

in morphology and function. It<br />

focuses on the cellular level first, including<br />

cellular alterations and response. It centers its<br />

approach on etiology, pathogenesis, clinical<br />

and microscopic signs and symptoms, differential<br />

diagnosis, treatment, follow-up and<br />

prognosis, with emphasis on those lesions<br />

most frequently encountered. It focuses on the<br />

recognition of pathological conditions, both<br />

systemic and oral, as well as their risk factors<br />

so appropriate precautions and/or treatment<br />

may be taken.<br />

This course is designed to prepare the student<br />

to provide local anesthesia to patients<br />

requiring pain management during the course<br />

of dental hygiene treatment. This course will<br />

provide the fundamental knowledge of<br />

choosing the appropriate agent, selection of<br />

injection, administering local anesthesia, and<br />

health history evaluation to avoid potential<br />

complications.<br />

This course provides lecture and laboratory experiences<br />

to apply the theory, techniques and applications of dental<br />

material manipulation to the clinical arena. All delegable<br />

expanded functions as outlined in the New Jersey Dental<br />

Auxiliaries Practice Act will be emphasized and taught to<br />

clinical competency. Exploration of the Dental Hygienists’<br />

role in Dental specialty practice is included.<br />
