This course outlines basic debtor/creditor<br />

bankruptcy law and provides guidelines,<br />

real estate, general provisions of the<br />

Bankruptcy Code and case administration<br />

(Chapter 7, Chapter 11 and Chapter 13).<br />

This course focuses on the legal and financial<br />

requirements of residential real estate<br />

transactions. It examines deeds, contracts,<br />

mortgages, and other documents commonly<br />

associated with real estate. Students learn the<br />

historical background which makes real estate<br />

unique, along with a practical understanding<br />

of the different local practices affecting its<br />

purchase and sale. Some basic math skills are<br />

helpful in understanding surveys, the proper<br />

calculation of taxes, and the settlement<br />

statement.<br />

LEX 125 Comparative Business Entities 3 cr.<br />

This course focuses on the sole proprietorship,<br />

partnership (general and limited), the limited<br />

liability company, and the general business<br />

corporation, including an analysis of<br />

formation, operation, dissolution, financing,<br />

and tax implications of each entity. It reviews<br />

legal documents including initial organizational<br />

documents, stock certificates, stock transfer<br />

ledger, by-laws and minutes, trade name certificates,<br />

and means of dissolution. It examines<br />

law practice and procedure in buy-sell<br />

agreements, employment agreements, and<br />

non-competition agreements.<br />

LEX 212 Civil Litigation Practice 3 cr.<br />

This course covers general rules governing<br />

lawyers, courts, and civil practice. Students<br />

become familiar with the court rules, pre-trial<br />

procedure, and common legal issues. Special<br />

emphasis is placed on understanding ethics<br />

rules and professional responsibility. Students<br />

are also taught the requirements for filing<br />

complaints, answers, and for pre-trial<br />

discovery, including interrogatories,<br />

depositions, subpoenas, and motion practice.<br />

Decedents’ Estates 3 cr.<br />

This course focuses on practice and<br />

procedures with respect to estates, wills and<br />

their legal effects, administration of estates,<br />

trusts, accountings, devises, bequests, distribution<br />

of estates, law of interstate distribution,<br />

obligations of fiduciaries, and the Probate<br />

Division of the courts. It also includes an<br />

examination of New Jersey inheritance tax and<br />

federal estate tax returns.<br />

LEX 225 Paralegal Skills and Practices 3 cr.<br />

This course focuses on the practical<br />

application of substantive law concerning civil<br />

litigation, personal and real property, probate<br />

Students prepare and analyze documents<br />

simulating practice in offices where paralegals<br />

may serve, using skills gained in prerequisite<br />

courses.<br />

LEX 235 Paralegal Internship 3 cr.<br />

The internship program provides an<br />

opportunity for students to gain a workplace<br />

experience. The student is placed in a law<br />

office or other firm using paralegals, under the<br />

guided by prescribed learning outcomes that<br />

are specific to the type and orientation of the<br />

law firm or business in which the student is<br />

placed.<br />

PHI 101 Introduction to Philosophy 3 cr.<br />

This course examines some of the<br />

fundamental questions concerning<br />

knowledge, existence, and value. Does God<br />

exist? What constitutes good and evil? Is there<br />

an afterlife? What is free will? It emphasizes<br />

examining the original works of important<br />

philosophers.<br />

PHI 105 Introduction to Logic 3 cr.<br />

This course introduces the principles of valid<br />

reasoning, with emphasis upon their practical<br />

uses in the development of critical thinking. It<br />

focuses on conditions of clear statements,<br />

semantics of definitions, adequate evidence,<br />

common fallacies, and inductive and<br />

deductive logic.<br />

PHI 112 Eastern Philosophy 3 cr.<br />

This course focuses on the traditional philosophies<br />

of China, such as Confucianism and<br />

Taoism, and the Buddhist philosophic<br />

tradition, stretching from India to Japan, with<br />

an emphasis on reading and interpreting<br />

original texts. Comparisons are made with<br />

appropriate Western traditions, such as the<br />

Greeks and the existentialists.<br />

This course focuses on an overview of Western<br />

thought from antiquity to the present. It<br />

emphasizes the development of civilization<br />

perspective of their roots in past societies. It<br />

stresses the impact of social and cultural<br />

factors upon the spirit of the times throughout<br />

history.<br />
