HIT 105 Medical Terminology 2 cr.<br />

This course is the study of medical<br />

terminology, the language of medicine,<br />

focusing on prefixes, suffixes, word roots and<br />

their combining forms by review of each body<br />

system and specialty area. It also emphasizes<br />

word construction, spelling, usage, comprehension,<br />

and<br />

pronunciation. In addition, students gain<br />

information regarding anatomy and<br />

physiology, symptomatology, pathology,<br />

diagnostic/surgical procedures, pharmacology,<br />

and medical abbreviations.<br />

HIT 107 Health Information<br />

in Non-Acute Care 3 cr.<br />

This course includes thorough discussion of<br />

the different types of non-acute care facilities.<br />

It emphasizes National and State accrediting,<br />

licensing and certifying standards regarding<br />

documentation and management of health<br />

information in non-acute patient records. It<br />

covers the development, content, and<br />

management of health information in the<br />

non-acute setting and students develop policy<br />

and procedures and perform qualitative/<br />

quantitative analysis on medical records. It also<br />

includes release of information and other basic<br />

functions of the Information Management<br />

Technologist in the non-acute care facility.<br />

Term paper completion is facilitated by an offsite<br />

visit to a non-acute care facility.<br />

HIT 110 Professional Practice<br />

Experience I 2 cr.<br />

This course is the first of two clinicals, which<br />

provide supervised professional practice<br />

experience in the acute care setting. It<br />

emphasizes the practical application of theory<br />

and concepts learned in HIT 101 and 103.<br />

Students are responsible for completing<br />

clinical objectives specific to the health<br />

information management department, the<br />

medical staff, and to other departments within<br />

the facility that work closely with the health<br />

information management department.<br />

HIT 115 Pathology 3 cr.<br />

This course focuses on the mechanisms of<br />

disease and disease effects on the human<br />

body. It emphasizes the disease process, basic<br />

concepts, terminology, the most common<br />

diseases of each body system, with normal<br />

anatomy and physiology compared to<br />

pathologic anatomy and physiologic malfunctioning<br />

due to the disease process. It also<br />

covers diagnostic methods, management,<br />

treatment modalities, and prognosis.<br />

HIT 116 Pharmacology for<br />

Allied Health Professions 2 cr.<br />

This course provides a framework of thinking<br />

for healthcare professionals, laying a<br />

foundation of knowledge about drug<br />

treatment. It focuses on a general understanding<br />

of the actions and reasons for use of<br />

various groups of pharmacologic agents. It<br />

discusses medications according to major drug<br />

classifications and body systems. It develops<br />

critical thinking through the use of relevant<br />

case studies and actual chart analysis.<br />

HIT 204 Healthcare Management<br />

and Personnel 3 cr.<br />

This course introduces the management and<br />

personnel skills necessary for entry-level<br />

employment at the supervisory level. It<br />

emphasizes management functions including<br />

planning, organizing, controlling, and<br />

directing and personnel skills such as communication,<br />

motivation, recruitment, discipline,<br />

and team building. Individual role playing and<br />

group activities are used.<br />

HIT 205 HCPCS Coding (CPT-4) 3 cr.<br />

This course introduces the student to<br />

Physicians’ Current Procedural Terminology,<br />

with emphasis on evaluation and<br />

management, modifiers, and surgical<br />

procedure coding guidelines. Students are<br />

presented with referencing resources specific<br />

to current conventional and federally administered<br />

CPT-4 coding guidelines. It discusses<br />

tumor and trauma registries. It uses a computerized<br />

classification system.<br />

HIT 208 Reimbursement Methodology 2 cr.<br />

This course presents Third Party Payer and<br />

Compliance/Auditing Issues, Correct Coding<br />

Policy, and Government Prospective Payment<br />

Systems (e.g. RBRVS, APC, DRG, RUG).<br />

Students learn terminology and principles<br />

commonly applied in the Managed Care<br />

environment. Students conduct a review of<br />

billing practices, applying the compliance<br />

guidelines introduced in the course.<br />

This course focuses on disease coding with the<br />

International Classification of Diseases 10th<br />

Edition, Clinical Modification (ICD-10-CM). It<br />

covers coding principles; conventions; clinical<br />

and technical guidelines; maintenance and<br />

referencing resources. It also emphasizes the<br />

review of medical records to identify<br />

diagnoses treated, and or services performed,<br />

and the correct sequencing for optimal reimbursement.<br />

HIT 210 ICD-10-PCS Coding 3 cr.<br />

This course focuses on procedure coding with<br />

the International Classification of Diseases<br />

Procedural Coding System (ICD-10-PCS). It<br />

covers history, structure and organization of<br />

the coding system. It also covers ICD-10-PCS<br />

attributes, characteristics and definitions. A<br />

review of each of the sections of the<br />

procedural coding systems is included. It also<br />

emphasizes the review of medical records to<br />

identify diagnoses treated, and or services<br />

performed, and the correct sequencing for<br />

optimal reimbursement.<br />

HIT 212 Professional Practice<br />

Experience II 2 cr.<br />

This course provides supervised professional<br />

practice experience in acute and non-acute<br />

settings. Practice objectives are designed to<br />

focus the student on management-oriented<br />

activities, fostering development of observational<br />

skills, independent function, problem<br />

analysis and solution, as well as integration of<br />

a range of technical knowledge and skills<br />

previously acquired. Students have clinical<br />

practice in the non-acute (direct and nondirect<br />

care) settings that provide them with<br />

opportunities to compare and contrast<br />

fundamental information management<br />

practices of alternative sites.<br />

HIT 218 Healthcare Quality and Performance<br />

Improvement 3 cr.<br />

This course focuses on sources and use of<br />

health data, including health data collection<br />

through manual and automated systems, data<br />

retrieval, analysis and display. The course<br />

focuses on and uses techniques of continuous<br />

quality improvement (CQI) and associated<br />

tools of data analysis. It includes vital statistics,<br />

reportable disease registries and conditions,<br />

and standards and requirements of<br />

accrediting, licensing, fiscal, and other<br />

regulatory agencies.<br />
