ACADEMIC INFORMATION/REGULATIONS<br />

Student Attendance Policy<br />

General Attendance Requirement<br />

Students are expected to attend all class,<br />

clinical, laboratory, and studio sessions for<br />

the full duration of each instructional session.<br />

Types of Excused Absences<br />

Without Penalty<br />

Students shall not be penalized for missing<br />

class, clinical, laboratory, and studio sessions<br />

due to: (1) the observance of religious<br />

holidays; (2) legal reasons (jury duty; to<br />

serve as a subpoenaed witness); (3) required<br />

military duty; (4) bereavement: loss of a<br />

family member; (5) personal illness/injury of<br />

the student; (6) to attend to the medical<br />

needs of a family member; and (7) such other<br />

reasons as the appropriate Division Dean or<br />

Associate Dean may deem appropriate.<br />

Students shall not be penalized for<br />

attending college-sponsored activities<br />

provided that they make accommodations<br />

with the instructor prior to the absence(s).<br />

Standing alone, absences due to the<br />

above reasons do not constitute grounds to<br />

lower the grade of a student or otherwise<br />

penalize a student.<br />

Appeal of Denial of Request<br />

for Absence Without Penalty<br />

A student who is denied a request for an<br />

excused absence by a faculty member can<br />

appeal that decision to the appropriate<br />

Division Dean or Associate Dean of the faculty<br />

member. The Division Dean or Associate Dean<br />

shall inform the faculty member of her/his<br />

decision. If the issue is still not resolved, the<br />

student can appeal the matter to the Vice<br />

President of Academic Programs whose<br />

decision shall be final and binding. The Vice<br />

President of Academic Programs will inform<br />

the Division Dean or Associate Dean of her/his<br />

decision, who shall in turn communicate the<br />

decision to the faculty member.<br />

Responsibilities for Completion<br />

of Missed Course Requirements<br />

A student must complete all course work<br />

missed because of absence. The student will<br />

contact the faculty member to make<br />

reasonable arrangements for the completion of<br />

course requirements not completed because<br />

of student absence due to one or more types<br />

of excused absences as specified in this policy.<br />

Special Note for Students Receiving<br />

Financial Aid and/or Veterans Aid<br />

Financial Aid and Veterans Aid programs<br />

require regular attendance and may be<br />

terminated when students participating in<br />

such programs are excessively absent.<br />

Credit Unit and Loads<br />

A credit hour, the unit of credit, is the<br />

equivalent of a subject pursued one 50minute<br />

period a week for 15 weeks or 750<br />

minutes of instruction. In gen eral, for<br />

laboratory courses, 100 to 200 minutes per<br />

week for 15 weeks equals one credit hour.<br />

The 15th week of the semester will be exam<br />

week. Credits for clinical in struction vary with<br />

the program.<br />

The normal academic load for stu dents in<br />

the fall and spring semesters is 15-17 credits;<br />

the minimum full-time load is 12 credits and<br />

the maximum full-time load is 17 credits.<br />

Students who would like to register for<br />

an overload – 18 or more credits, must have<br />

an overall GPA of a 3.0 or higher. Signed<br />

permission from a counselor/academic<br />

advisor is required on a schedule which<br />

contains an overload.<br />

The normal academic load for students in<br />

summer terms is not to exceed a maximum<br />

of 7 credits per term.<br />

Students who are receiving finan cial aid,<br />

veterans’ benefits, Social Security or other<br />

types of aids/grants must carry a 12-credit<br />

hour load during the fall or spring semester<br />

for full benefits.<br />

International students who have been issued<br />

a student visa to attend the college must<br />

complete at least 12 credits in the fall and<br />

spring semesters. This is a requirement of the<br />

U.S. Im migration and Naturalization Service.<br />

Students carrying a load of one to 11<br />

credits are considered part-time students,<br />

during the fall or spring semester.<br />

Phi Theta Kappa<br />

Phi Theta Kappa is the International Honor<br />

Society of the Two-year <strong>College</strong>. Each fall<br />

and spring semester, invitations to join Chi<br />

Iota, <strong>Burlington</strong> <strong>County</strong> <strong>College</strong>’s chapter,<br />

are sent to eligible students. Eligible students<br />

have completed at least 12 college-level<br />

credits at <strong>Burlington</strong> <strong>County</strong> <strong>College</strong> with a<br />

cumulative GPA of 3.5 or higher, and have<br />

received no grad of D, F, ST, or I and no<br />

more than one semester grade of X.<br />

Assessment Activities<br />

<strong>Burlington</strong> <strong>County</strong> <strong>College</strong> is committed to<br />

providing each student a quality college<br />

experience. In order that we continue to<br />

improve the quality of our programs and<br />

activities, it is necessary to assess our efforts in<br />

student learning, student satisfaction, student<br />

development and student involvement.<br />

Therefore, students will be requested to<br />

participate in college assessment activities.<br />

Educational Technology<br />

Statement<br />

<strong>Burlington</strong> <strong>County</strong> <strong>College</strong> advocates a<br />

technology enhanced teaching and<br />

learning environment. Advanced technological<br />

tools may be used in any course<br />

section to facilitate instruction. Many of<br />

our sections are web-enhanced, which<br />

means that some of your work will be<br />

submitted or completed online. Web<br />

enhancements may include on-line<br />

materials, grade books, testing and<br />

quizzes and assignment submission.<br />

Many students enjoy the flexibility<br />

and convenience that these online<br />

enhancements have provided, however<br />

if you have concerns about the<br />

technology involved, please speak to<br />

your instructor immediately.<br />
