public; selling out; acquisitions; bankruptcy;<br />

This is a practical course which has students<br />

work in the field, individually or occasionally in<br />

pairs, on real entrepreneurial projects.<br />

Students apply concepts learned in class by<br />

an entrepreneur on a specific project. Students<br />

work independently, with guidance from the<br />

Fashion Design<br />

FAD 102 Fashion Design Seminar 1 cr.<br />

This course is an introduction to fashion<br />

design and allows students, working both<br />

individually and in groups, to practice the<br />

apparel development and apparel<br />

merchandising process. Students design,<br />

draft a pattern for, and sew an original design<br />

in fashion fabric.<br />

FAD 105 Introductory Fashion Drawing 2 cr.<br />

This course enables students to use a variety of<br />

media and techniques, including computer<br />

software, to execute fashion croqui (drawing<br />

aids), fashion illustrations, flat (technical)<br />

sketches of apparel, and fabric studies. There<br />

is some drawing of the live fashion figure.<br />

FAD 130 Sewn Product Construction 3 cr.<br />

This course introduces techniques and<br />

materials required to construct sewn products<br />

(primarily but not exclusively apparel) as well<br />

as the basic concepts and terminology of<br />

industrial garment production. Students<br />

demonstrate mastery of assembly methods<br />

through the use of commercial patterns,<br />

production patterns, and the text to produce<br />

samples and sample garments. A variety of<br />

industrial equipment is used and no prior<br />

experience with sewing is required.<br />

FAD 132 Sewn Products Construction<br />

and Alteration 3 cr.<br />

This course covers practical problems that<br />

feature the creation and execution of soft<br />

goods in various categories (home, recreation<br />

and toys, and apparel) and includes the<br />

techniques and equipment required for the<br />

construction, re-design, and alteration of sewn<br />

products already in existence.<br />

FAD 135 Introduction to Textiles 3 cr.<br />

This course introduces textile materials and<br />

processes pertinent to apparel design and<br />

development, and emphasizes textiles<br />

currently used in the apparel industry. It<br />

focuses on fibers, yarns, and textile structures<br />

and textile styling and advances in technology.<br />

FAD 137 History of Costume I 3 cr.<br />

This course builds foundation knowledge<br />

concerned with the history of the technical<br />

and esthetic aspects of apparel, beginning<br />

with the pre-historical period and continuing<br />

to the era of economic expansion occurring at<br />

the end of the 17th century. Dress will be<br />

considered in historical, social, and economic<br />

contexts, and as manufactured products<br />

reflecting available technologies and materials.<br />

This course builds foundation knowledge<br />

concerned with the history of the technical<br />

products reflecting available technologies<br />

This course introduces flat pattern methods for<br />

designing basic apparel. Students demonstrate<br />

an understanding of the aesthetic and<br />

garment, including awareness of the role a<br />

target market plays in creation of the design.<br />

FAD 145 Technical Skills for Apparel<br />

Design and Development II 4 cr.<br />

This course builds upon demonstrated skills in<br />

flat pattern methods for designing basic<br />

apparel. Students create original designs for<br />

jacket and pant variations based on a target<br />

market.<br />

An original ensemble, drafted and then<br />

constructed in fashion fabric, is required.<br />

Prerequisite: FAD 140, FAD 230<br />

FAD 150 The Fashion Industry 3 cr.<br />

This course focuses on the structure of, and<br />

the relationships within, the international<br />

fashion industry. Students analyze the<br />

marketing of fashion products; the esthetic,<br />

and current topics and careers in the industry.<br />

FAD 180 Digital Portfolio Development<br />

for Fashion Design 3 cr.<br />

This course uses industry-appropriate<br />

computer software to execute flat garment<br />

sketches and enhance fashion illustrations.<br />

Students also collect and document their<br />

previously completed program projects in<br />

digital form. A portfolio of this work is<br />

assembled, in both digital and traditional<br />

formats, for industry employment or for<br />

transfer to a four-year institution.<br />

This course focuses on students’ technical<br />

skills, design capabilities, and awareness of<br />

FAD 230 Advanced Sewing Techniques<br />

for Apparel Design 2 cr.<br />

This course covers advanced techniques in the<br />

construction of sewn garments. Students will<br />

demonstrate mastery of the steps required to<br />

create a lined interfaced garment, and will<br />

incorporate original styling details in this piece.<br />
