It emphasizes the honing of clinical skills, the<br />

synthesis of prior learning, and application to the<br />

delivery of care. It covers practice management<br />

workforce and its various demands.<br />

Diagnostic Medical Sonography<br />

DMS 101 Introduction to Sonography 2 cr.<br />

Introduces the diagnostic foundations of<br />

diagnostic medical sonography, including<br />

terminology, scan plane orientations,<br />

anatomical relationships, departmental administrative<br />

operations, hospital organization,<br />

HIPPA regulations, blood and fluid precautions<br />

and basic patient care principles.<br />

DMS 102 Cross-sectional Anatomy 2 cr.<br />

This course will require the student to study<br />

sectional anatomy of the body in the transverse,<br />

longitudinal and coronal planes. Emphasis will<br />

sonographically. There will also be correlation of<br />

the anatomy to sonographic images.<br />

DMS 103 Ultrasound Abdomen 2 cr.<br />

This course will give the student a comprehensive<br />

understanding of the pathological<br />

processes that may affect the abdominal<br />

organs. Diseases of the liver, biliary tract,<br />

pancreas, urinary system, spleen, gastrointestinal<br />

tract, retro peritoneal and gynecological<br />

structures are included in this discussion along<br />

with correlation of sonographic images.<br />

Classroom instruction will be coordinated with<br />

lab activities in DMS 120.<br />

DMS 104 Ultrasound OB/GYN I 2 cr.<br />

This course will prepare the student to<br />

perform sonograms of the female pelvis,<br />

encompassing both gynecological and<br />

obstetrical examinations. This course consists<br />

of normal pelvic anatomy and pathological<br />

processes in the first trimester to include<br />

menstrual cycle and embryology. Cross<br />

sectional anatomy of these structures and their<br />

sonographic and clinical activities in DMS 120.<br />

DMS 120 Lab Practicum 1 cr.<br />

This course is designed to develop the<br />

student’s ultrasonic skills in the campus<br />

laboratory. Students will get accustomed to<br />

performing sonographic examinations by<br />

practicing proper scanning ergonomics,<br />

applying gel, scanning techniques, scanning<br />

protocols and locating and identifying<br />

normal anatomy.<br />

DMS 205 Ultrasound OB/GYN II 3 cr.<br />

This course will prepare the student to<br />

perform sonograms of the female pelvis,<br />

encompassing both gynecological and<br />

obstetrical examinations. This course consists<br />

of normal and abnormal anatomy throughout<br />

the second and third trimesters of pregnancy.<br />

Cross sectional anatomy of these structures<br />

and their appearances on the sonogram will<br />

be discussed. Fetal abnormalities, high-risk<br />

pregnancies and maternal disease will also be<br />

correlated to the sonographic examination.<br />

Classroom instruction will be coordinated with<br />

lab and clinical activities in the DMS 221.<br />

DMS 206 Diagnostic Imaging 3 cr.<br />

This course represents the clinical component<br />

of the student experience for this semester.<br />

Certain lab activities and clinical procedures<br />

are designed to develop the student’s<br />

scanning skills. Classroom instruction will be<br />

coordinated with certain lab and clinical<br />

activities in the DMS 222.<br />

Prerequisite: DMS 120<br />

DMS 207 Vascular Ultrasound 3 cr.<br />

This course will provide the student with an<br />

understanding of the uses of Doppler and<br />

color ultrasound in the diagnostic evaluation<br />

of vascular disease. Instruction will include a<br />

discussion of the principles of Doppler physics<br />

and instrumentation, hemodynamics, imaging<br />

protocols and proper scanning techniques for<br />

performing DVT and carotid artery studies.<br />

Classroom instruction will be coordinated with<br />

certain lab and clinical activities in the DMS<br />

223.<br />

DMS 211 Ultrasound Physics II 2 cr.<br />

This course will provide the student with a<br />

practical understanding of the principles of<br />

ultrasound physics as it applies to diagnostic<br />

medical imaging. The course material will<br />

focus on physical principles of sound energy,<br />

transducer and equipment design, sound<br />

productions/ transmission/attenuation,<br />

imaging artifacts and safety/biological effects.<br />

DMS 221 Clinical Practicum I 2 cr.<br />

This course was designed to integrate the<br />

didactic education into the clinical environment<br />

abdominal, pelvic, obstetrical and superficial<br />

structures.<br />
