The epic dragonsentirely outside the commonly accepted categoriesof chromatic and metallic dragons, and may originateon another plane of existence. They are further distinguishedfrom the common dragons described in theMonster Manual by their tremendous size (even athatching), their longer life span (with correspondinglygreater increases in power as they age), and theirmastery of unusual energy forms—force and prismaticenergy.While common dragons are easily categorized byalignment and temperament, epic dragons displaymuch more individual variation in these areas. Dragonsof both varieties are usually neutral, pursuing theirown interests rather than the great causes of alignmentconflict. Some are extremely selfish and ill-tempered,while others are as beneficent as gold dragons. In addition, the breath weapon ofthe oldest epic dragons is a larger cone than most Colossaldragons possess.
