The epic dragonsentirely outside the commonly accepted categoriesof chromatic and metallic dragons, and may originateon another plane of existence. They are further distinguishedfrom the common dragons described in theMonster Manual by their tremendous size (even athatching), their longer life span (with correspondinglygreater increases in power as they age), and theirmastery of unusual energy forms—force and prismaticenergy.While common dragons are easily categorized byalignment and temperament, epic dragons displaymuch more individual variation in these areas. Dragonsof both varieties are usually neutral, pursuing theirown interests rather than the great causes of alignmentconflict. Some are extremely selfish and ill-tempered,while others are as beneficent as gold dragons. Evenwyrmling epic dragons are Huge, however, and are capableof making tail sweep and crush attacks. Althoughthere is no size category larger than Colossal, the oldestepic dragons have a greater reach and deal more damagewith their attacks than other Colossal dragons, as shownon the Epic Dragon Face and Reach and Epic DragonAttacks tables below. In addition, the breath weapon ofthe oldest epic dragons is a larger cone than most Colossaldragons possess. Any epic dragon canchoose epic feats for which it otherwise meets the prerequisites.Epic dragons also have access to the dragonfeats in the Monster Manual, as well as the additional featsdescribed in this book.Empower Spell-Like Ability: An epic dragon canapply the Empower Spell feat to one of its spell-likeabilities that it can use at least twice per day. If thedragon has limited use of the spell-like ability (3/day,for example), the empowered ability uses up two usesof the ability. If the dragon can use the ability at will,there is no cost for empowering the ability. The dragondoes not need to specify a spell-like ability when itchooses this feat; it can apply the feat to any spell-likeability it possesses.Maximize Spell-Like Ability: The dragon canapply the Maximize Spell feat to one of its spell-likeabilities that it can use at least three times per day. Ifthe dragon has limited use of the spell-like ability(3/day, for example), the maximized ability uses upthree uses of the ability.
