Outside factors can affect a character'sLeadership score, as detailed in Table 2–26: Leadership Modifiers in the DUNGEON MASTER's Guide.Cohort Level: The character can attract a cohort of up to this level. Regardless of the character's Leadership score, he can't recruita cohort of his level or higher.Number of Followers by Level: The character can lead up to the indicated number of characters of each level. For example, a characterwith a Leadership score of 31 can lead up to 350 1st-level followers, 35 2nd-level followers, and so on.*Your maximum cohort level increases by 1 for every 2 points of Leadership above 40.**Your number of 1st-level followers increases by 100 for every point of Leadership above 40.†You can command one-tenth as many 2nd-level followers as 1st-level followers. You can command one-half as many 3rd-levelfollowers as 2nd-level followers, one-half as many 4th-level followers as 3rd-level followers, and so on (round fractions up, except anyfraction less than 1 rounds to 0). You can't have a follower of higher than 20th level (or whose effective follower level is greater than20th; see Exceptional Followers section above).CHAPTER 1:CHARACTERS,SKILLS & FEATSTABLE 1–34: EXAMPLE SPECIAL EPIC COHORTSCreature Alignment Level EquivalentAstral deva Any good 22ndAncient silver dragon Lawful good 30thCouatl Lawful good 18thCloud giant Neutral good 19thGhaele eladrin Chaotic good 21stStorm giant Chaotic good 20thWyrm brass dragon Chaotic good 27thDragon turtle Neutral 17thHydra, 12-headed Neutral 19thRoc Neutral 17thAncient green dragon Lawful evil 28thGelugon (devil) Lawful evil 21stCloud giant Neutral evil 19thGlabrezu (demon) Chaotic evil 23rdSuccubus (demon) Chaotic evil 18thWyrm white dragon Chaotic evil 26thOPTIONAL RULE: EXCEPTIONALFOLLOWERSThough followers are normally warriors, experts, orcommoners, your DM might allow you to have charactersof other classes as followers. If you use thisoptional rule, adept or aristocrat followers count as followersof two levels higher than their actual characterlevel. A follower with any levels in a PC class counts asa follower three levels higher than his character level.A follower with any levels in a prestige class counts as afollower five levels higher than his character level. Thisreflects the fact that such characters are rarely followersand are much more likely to be unique characters intheir own right. For example, a 6th-level commoner, warrior, orexpert counts as a 6th-level follower. A 6th-level adeptor aristocrat would count as an 8th-level follower. A6th-level fighter or 3rd-level aristocrat/3rd-levelwizard would count as an 9th-level follower. A 5thlevelrogue/1st-level assassin would count as an 11thlevelfollower.EPIC SKILLSLidda the epic rogue can hustle across a hair-thinthread, put her ear to a door, and hear a cat breathingthree rooms away. Ember the epic monk can scrambleup a perfectly smooth surface faster than a normalperson can run. Devis the epic bard can fast-talk a lichinto giving up its phylactery, and Jozan the epic clericcan turn a pack of snarling barbarians into diehardfanatics for Pelor. These are examples of epic level skill use. Some aremerely logical extensions of the skill descriptions in thePlayer's Handbook, while others seem almost mystical intheir execution.Skill checks work just as they always have: Roll 1d20and add your skill modifier. Tasks either have a particularDifficulty Class (DC) or are opposed by another roll(usually a skill check of the same or an opposing skill).Your maximum skill rank is equal to your character37
