CHAPTER 5:MONSTERSSome sages declare that the Old Ones, thegods who were before the gods of today, created umbralblots as messengers and sometimes assassins. A few evenmaintain that they were called “Assassins of the ElderGods” in certain ancient texts because, having been createdby the forgotten gods of yore, they destroyed theircreators and have since roamed the cosmos idly, searchingfor any who may have escaped them.An umbral blot is perfectly silent; it never speaks. Perhapsit understands the lost language of the Old Ones, but if so, no others are left to converse with now.COMBATAn umbral blot simply advances until it comes intocontact with a target and disintegrates it, showing subtletyonly when faced with elusive foes. However, itprefers to initially come at foes from a direction theymight not expect, and often disintegrates its waythrough the floor below or the ceiling above as itcharges to attack.Disintegrating Touch (Ex): Any material objectthat comes into contact with a blackball is immediatelydisintegrated unless it succeeds at a Fortitude save (DC38). A character or object that has been disintegrated byan umbral blot disappears completely, leaving behindnot even dust to mark its passing. Those who make asuccessful saving throw still take 5d6 points of damagefrom the disintegrating touch. Likewise, weapons orobjects that save take a like amount of damage.(Remember, tended or held objects save with the samebonus as their owners.)Vortex (Ex): Sometimes an umbral blot finds a particularlyagile and speedy target eluding its touch. Insuch cases, it generally resorts to its vortex attack. Normallya blackball insulates itself somehow from the airaround it (otherwise it would perpetuallybe at the center of a howling windstorm). If it chooses, instead ofallowing the air to bend around it,the blackball can suspend this insulation, causing a sudden rush of windto pour toward the blackball from all directions. This vortex sucks all the air from a30-foot-by-30-foot-by-30-foot room in asingle round, creating a sudden influx of airin its direction. All flying or floatingcreatures within 30 feet of the umbralblot who fail a Reflex save (DC 38) areswept along with the wind into contactwith the blackball. Nonflying creatureswithin 30 feet who fail a Reflexsave (DC 19) are pulled into contactwith the umbral blot. Contact with anumbral blot could lead to disintegration,as noted above.Spell Immunities (Ex): Inaddition to the spells thatan umbral blot is immuneto because of itsconstruct traits, it is immune to disintegration spells andvariations thereof.Planar Travel (Ex): A blackball can fold space at will, allowing it to use ethereal jaunt, dimension door, teleportwithout error, or plane shift at will as a standard action.Construct Traits: Immune to mind-affecting effects(charms, compulsions, phantasms, patterns, and moraleeffects), and to poison, sleep, paralysis, stunning, disease, death effects, necromantic effects, and any effectthat requires a Fortitude save unless it also works onobjects. Cannot heal damage (though regeneration andfast healing still apply, if present). Not subject to criticalhits, subdual damage, ability damage, ability drain,or energy drain. Not at risk of death from massivedamage, but destroyed when reduced to 0 hit points orless; cannot be raised or resurrected.
