260THE JUBILEE NUMBER OF ZIHVA 108When the comrade delegated by the Central Committeeof the Social-Democratic Party of the Lettish Region made areport on the status of work in the Social-Democratic Partyof the Lettish Region at the plenary meeting of the CentralCommittee of the R.S.D.L.P. (this report was summarisedin No. 12 of our Party’s Central Organ), we were left withthe impression of an unusually “normal” and painless developmentof the Lettish Social-Democratic movement duringthe difficult times through which we are passing. Whatcreated this impression was that the Social-DemocraticParty of the Lettish Region, being the most proletarianin composition and with a mainly working-class leadership,has already, in accordance with the demands of objectivecircumstances, proceeded to work out special tactics andsolve the organisational problems of this protracted periodof counter-revolution. During the revolution the Lettishproletariat and the Lettish Social-Democratic Party occupiedone of the first and most prominent places in the struggleagainst the autocracy and all the forces of the old order.Incidentally, it is not without interest to note that the officialstrike statistics of 1905 (published by the Ministryof Trade and Industry) 109 show that Livonian Guberniatakes first place for the persistence of the proletarian strikemovement. In 1905 the number of factory workers in LivonianGubernia totalled 53,917, while the number ofstrikers was 268,567, i.e., almost five times (4.38) as many!In that year every worker in Livonian Gubernia went onstrike on the average 5 times.
